The VCM’s thriving jazz program offers something for everyone – our students come from all music disciplines and genres; classical, folk, rock, pop, hip hop, country, R&B, and just about anything else. They learn instrument skills, language, improvisation, composition, history, ear-training, and ensemble skills. Join the VCM jazz program to learn from an amazing group of instructors who also perform regularly in local, national, and international jazz circles.
Individual Lessons
The VCM offers private lessons in all aspects of jazz performance. Studies include improvisation and stylistic interpretation along with appropriate technique. All our teachers are busy professionals who have strong backgrounds in both jazz and classical performance. Our students encompass a wide range of levels from beginner to semi-professional.
Group Classes
This new course explores exercises and techniques for teaching rhythm, style, reading, conducting and improvisation in Jazz as well as coaching ensembles. Students should already have some performing experience, and should be considering either class or private instruction as part of their career plan.
Every third Thursday in Wood Hall, various Jazz faculty will host special masterclasses on
Jazz performance. Students will have an opportunity to perform both as soloists and in various groups. Faculty and students together will offer suggestions and impromptu performance “jam” sessions will be encouraged.
Jazz Combo and Improvisation
Groups of 4-8 players work on small group jazz under the guidance of our faculty instructors. The instructors often bring in their own arrangements and perform with their combo.
Jazz Language
Students develop a thorough understanding of chords, keys, modes and improvisation. The curriculum also includes counterpoint, harmony, form and analysis as used throughout the history of music and, specifically, with the various streams and styles of jazz.
Jazz Composition & Arranging
Designed for Jazz Diploma majors, this course is a continuation of ‘Jazz Language’ but with a greater focus on composition and arranging. Works created by these students are recorded and performed by VCM Jazz ensembles.
Jazz Historical Survey
A broad survey of the many branches of the streams and styles of jazz music from early in the 20th century to the present.
Jazz Musicianship
A comprehensive ear-training course that covers elementary jazz- oriented aural skills, including sight singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation, voicing and voice-leading, chord recognition, and transcription skills.
Jazz Keyboard Skills
A comprehensive foundation of essential Jazz keyboard skills, primarily intended for those who are either not piano majors or piano players who are not Jazz majors. Emphasis will be placed on developing ability in chordal accompaniment, voicing technique, sight-reading, chord alteration and improvisation.
Business of Music
Designed for both jazz majors and students of other disciplines, this is an introduction to aspects of business and professional associations that affect today’s working musicians. Topics include the A.F.M., recording, networking, advertising, revenue sources, grants and financial management.
Contemporary Vocal Styles
This course explores the art of vocal performance and improvisation within modern styles such as jazz, gospel, blues and soul. Each class will focus on developing the singer’s performance ability with an emphasis on strong vocal technique, improvisation and individual artistic interpretation.
