TELEMANN: A 250th Anniversary Celebration

Delight in the music of Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the most prolific and popular composers of 18th Century Europe, at the 2017 Pacific Baroque Festival from February 16th to 19th. Join us as we celebrate Telemann`s 250th anniversary, and discover why he was considered the leading German composer of his time, whose fame exceeded even that of J.S. Bach.

“There is no other composer in the first half of the eighteenth century that has enriched the musical life with such a variety of styles, techniques and experiments” – Hille Perl, 2016.

This year’s program will present a range of wonderful music by Telemann and his contemporaries. An intimate Thursday-morning concert features two of Telemann’s unusual Fantasias for solo viola da gamba, part of a set considered lost until rediscovered in a private collection in 2015. ‘The Faithful Music Master Goes to Paris’ on Friday will include three of his incomparable ‘Paris Quartets’, described as “among the most beguiling chamber works of the late-Baroque period” (Gramophone Magazine). Victoria will be introduced to a rising star of the baroque organ, John Walthausen, recently Organist-in-Residence at Sapporo Concert Hall, Japan, and to Kenneth Slowik, renowned cellist/gambist and director of chamber music programs at the Smithsonian Institution. The Saturday concert, ‘Three Lapsed Lawyers’, will feature Slowik in Telemann’s exuberant suite for solo viola da gamba and orchestra, as well as the award-winning Victoria Children’s Choir. On Sunday, the Festival will present the first performance since the 17th century of Christoph Graupner’s cantata ‘Herr nun lässest du deinen Diener’.
