Victoria Philharmonic Choir – Vaughan Williams & Puccini

The Victoria Philharmonic Choir as conducted by Peter Butterfield opens its season of “Peace and Calm” with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ heart-rending cry for peace and reconciliation, Dona Nobis Pacem, inspired by the composer’s experiences as an ambulance driver on the WW1 battlefields, and composed in 1936. The second half is Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, written in 1876 when the composer was just 18. It’s an exuberant, even theatrical setting of a full Mass, with a joyous Gloria and several other beautiful melodies that foreshadow Puccini’s operas that were to come.

The concert features members of the Victoria Symphony, soloists will include Canadian/British soprano Eve Daniell and well known bass and a baritone, Gary Relyea and  Andrew Greenwood.
