Michael Wilford grew up playing drums in the rich and diverse musical network of Northern British Columbia. From a young age Michael was inspired and taught by many musical mentors including Mike Doogan-Smith and his Smithers Secondary School Band Program, Leslie Jean McMillan and the dynamic father-son duo of Richard and Jake Jenne. They not only taught him but also exposed him to a wide variety of musical experiences including ensembles, performances, and the opportunities to work with inspiring musicians from around the world. By the time Michael had graduated high school he had performed all over British Columbia and beyond with a variety of ensembles spanning from a fifty-piece fiddle group to pop and alternative rock bands.
As a songwriter Michael has reached many audiences with his music. From the beginning, song writing and the excitement of performing original music live has shaped Michael’s musical journey. His music has been performed most notably at events like: Kispiox Music Festival, Music on Main, Lukefest and MuchMusic’s ‘The Afternoon Show’.
In 2015 Michael moved to Victoria to study drums with Damian Graham through the Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music. This has given him the chance to work and perform with amazing artists like Daniel Lapp, Louise Rose, Bill Henderson and many others. He is currently finishing his diploma in Music Performance at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and is busy writing and performing music with a variety of artists.
