“Bringing music to the hearts and minds of students opens up worlds of imagination and creativity. The confidence required to present these ideas, along with the discipline to harness them, prepares a student to face any challenge in life.”
~ Michael van der Sloot
Our String Department has instruction and programming for students of all abilities. We have a rich resource of dedicated faculty in the disciplines of violin, viola, cello, double bass, classical guitar, lute, harp, and historical instruments.
We offer comprehensive programming for those who wish to pursue music in a variety of in-depth settings. In addition to high-level private instruction and introductory group classes, several orchestras ensure a place for students on any instrument and at any level. We also arrange chamber music opportunities for students of similar ability levels.
Within the String Department, the VCM has created an environment and series of programs that can take the beginner to the highest international levels. These classes, when combined with our many performance opportunities as well as additional VCM classes, allow students of any age the well-rounded and enriching experiences that studying on a string instrument can offer.
If you are interested in playing in a small group setting with musicians of similar ability, the VCM offers a variety of options. Whether you have a pre-formed ensemble or are hoping to find like-minded players, we can help. Many of our highly qualified faculty offer chamber music coaching in a shared lesson setting. We’ll help organize groups where necessary, arrange a coach, and provide rehearsal and practice space.
Orchestral Strings Masterclass
Regular masterclasses are offered for students of violin, viola and cello. Classes focus on performance practice and technique. Currently registered VCM string students are encouraged to attend. Masterclass are facilitated through a rotation of senior VCM string teachers, including the department head, and occasional visiting guest artists.
