School of Contemporary Music
“We are thrilled to offer instruction in a wide range of musical genres for all members of the community. It has been the joy of my life to explore music in many forms and genres in a great variety of contexts, and we are happy to offer these opportunities to you!”
~ Daniel Lapp
Music Education is for everyone. Since 2014 the VCM now offers many more opportunities to learn and explore a wide range of musical genres beyond its traditional Classical roots, through the new Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music. Here you will find the leadership to help you take your first steps into making the music you love, and more advanced mentorship to help get you to take it to the next level. Our faculty are working, touring, recording professionals who are thrilled to teach and share the music they love with you.
The school’s professional coaches and mentors work together with students in practically any popular-contemporary genre, including jazz, rock, folk, bluegrass, indie, R&B, funk, soul, electronica, and more. Disciplines include acoustic and electric guitar, electric and upright bass, fiddle, keys and synthesizers, drums and percussion, DJ, recording and production, vocals, band-building, and stage presence.
Built from the ground up, through the enormous generosity of former VCM Board Chair, Ed Chwyl, and his family, the Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music, launched in September 2014, is the first of its kind in Canada, transforming a traditional Conservatory with Classical roots, into a central hub of music education with a truly “contemporary” reach. This is reflected not only through the many diverse musical genres and instruments available for study, but also through the flexibility VCM faculty have to accommodate many styles of learning, including those learning exclusively by ear, and the self-taught, the “lone wolves”, to name a few.
