Charlie Dutton: Spark to Flame Student Feature

Meet Charlie Dutton!

One of the student performers at the 2021 Spark to Flame Online Student Showcase!

Charlie DuttonCharlie Dutton is a first year postsecondary student studying music performance at Camosun College. He began studying piano in Edmonton at age 7, then moved to Victoria in 2013 and began studying piano with Roger Buksa at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Charlie has performed in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival several times in previous years and has received substantial awards and scholarship from both GVPAF and the Victoria Conservatory of Music. After two years at Camosun, he plans to transfer to another postsecondary institution and spend two more years finishing his degree in music performance. Other than music, Charlie likes to travel, play soccer, run, rock climb, and spend time with his friends and family.

Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?

I have never played with an orchestra before, and it seems like it would be an outstanding experience. Playing a concerto with an orchestra is not a common opportunity, so I was excited to take advantage of that opportunity.

What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?

I am playing Piano Concerto No.2 in F minor Op.21 by Frederic Chopin. I chose this concerto because it is an absolutely breathtaking piece of music that was written by my favourite composer. I have also enjoyed having success in performing Chopin’s work in the past, because I am so passionate about it.

What are your aspirations in music?

I’m not sure what my specific career in music will end up being, but whether I am teaching, performing, composing, producing, recording, or any combination of the above, I want to have music as part of my career.

Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music

Other than music, I am also interested in math and sciences which I was planning on pursuing until I had realized that music was my lifetime passion. I am currently working part time to save as much money as I can to travel the world with my best friend once it is safe to do so. I have always really enjoyed playing sports throughout my childhood and look forward to the day when campus sports are allowed again.
