Please join us in welcoming Daniel Brandes as the new Artistic Director for the School of Music Technology and Creativity!
Daniel Brandes as a member of VCM Faculty since 2016, currently teaching the Theory Fundamentals and The Creative Impulse courses for the Dept of Postsecondary Studies, and also managing and directing the ChoirKids program in local Elementary Schools since the VCM began its partnership with the Arbutus Singers mixed choir in 2015, and formally adopted the program in 2016.
Prior to Daniel joining VCM faculty, his work in the community was already well known, as composer and performer (M.Mus, UVic – Composition studies with Christopher Butterfield and Daniel Bíro), concert presenter, and teacher (Composer in the Classroom via the Canadian Music Centre, BC Region). From June 2014 to May 2015, with financial assistance from the BC Arts Council’s Early Career Development program, Daniel successfully completed an Arts Management internship year at the VCM under the Dean’s mentorship.
Daniel brings a great passion for music education to the Artistic Director position and has a keen focus on fostering creativity throughout the ways we teach and learn about music. Daniel has developed and delivered creative music programs at all levels for youth through to older adults. In addition to his expertise in music theory and composition, Daniel has a broad knowledge of music technologies and their creative uses. As a composer and experimental music practitioner, Daniel’s collaborations have involved the use of various music technologies, including electronic music and digital notation. His strength in this area is an important asset, as he leads the Music Technology faculty in the School of Music Technology and Creativity through continued development and growth of a wide variety of programs that speak to the current and future needs of emerging young musicians.
We look forward to Daniel Brandes leading the School of Music Technology and Creativity!
