Creative Innovations

The Victoria Conservatory of Music presents “Creative Innovations”, a concert recorded live and premiering online via the Victoria Conservatory’s YouTube channel on Saturday, May 29th 2021 at 7:30 pm PDT.  The concert integrates four world premieres of music compositions by VCM students with the historically innovative Four Seasons violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, performed by the newly launched VCM Chamber Orchestra, led by outstanding VCM faculty, and joined by soloist and VCM alumnus Jonathan Crow.

In lieu of purchasing tickets, a suggested donation of $15 or more is kindly requested.

Creative Innovations is presented by Rick Wesseling Investment Group of BMO Nesbitt Burns.

The concert features three creative innovations:

  • The performance of Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – a series of four violin concertos that represent a revolutionary creative innovation in music, from the early 18th century! Nothing like this music had every been written before, conjuring musical images of flowing streams, various species of songbirds, buzzing flies, a shepherd and his barking dog, drunken dancers, hunting parties, winter freeze, warming by the fire, summer storms, and more. Renowned VCM Alumnus Jonathan Crow and the VCM Chamber Orchestra will perform these amazing works.

  • Four world premieres of works by young VCM students who, as members of the VCM Composition Club, are led by celebrated Canadian composer and VCM Faculty member Christine Donkin.

  • The debut of the VCM’s Chamber Orchestra. Led by David Visentin, this new “Honours” ensemble is comprised of top VCM students. This project-based ensemble offers flexibility to include student winds and brass players as repertoire requires, be the VCM resident orchestra for its annual Spark to Flame event, and offer opportunities for young VCM composers to have their new works premiered.

Alumnus Jonathan Crow

The Victoria Conservatory of Music is very proud of Alumnus Jonathan Crow, a native of Prince George BC, and former student of VCM’s founding Head of Strings, Sydney Humphreys. Currently in his 10th season as Concert Master for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Jonathan is founding member of the Juno Award-winning New Orford String Quartet, and Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Toronto. His inspiring work with young school children across the country, helping to grow their awareness and love for music, aligns perfectly with the spirit of our concert “Creative Innovations”. The VCM continues to support and enhance music programming offered in local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, with a strong focus on schools serving marginalized communities throughout the Greater Victoria Area.
