Since its founding in the year 2000 it has inspired the creation and screening of thousands of films in more than 50 international locations. CineVic proudly brings OTS8 back again for its 7th edition on Vancouver Island. \n\nEarlier this summer\, participants from Victoria and the surrounding region were given a camera\, a roll of film\, and one week to create their own 3-minute Super 8 movie. The only catch: no editing. The filmmakers had to capture their scenes in order with no second chances\, and they’ll witness their work for the first time along with the audience at two live screenings! \n\nDrinks will be available for purchase\, and the audience is invited to stay for a short mingle with the filmmakers after the show. \n\n\nVenue Accessibility\n1411 Quadra Street entrance is wheelchair accessible at street level. There is one wheelchair accessible washroom on the main level.

He has appeared with over 30 string quartets\, including the Amadeus (when he replaced an ailing Benny Goodman on a tour of California)\, Guarneri\, Vermeer\, New Zealand and St Lawrence Quartets. He has made 40 recordings\, including the Debussy Rhapsody with  Glenn Gould\, the Philharmonia Orchestra of London\, and the premiere recording of the Berio arrangement of the Brahms F minor Sonata with the London Symphony. His recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet was chosen by the BBC and London Times as the best available. With a global reach that enhances and inspires a new classical audience\, Ray Chen’s remarkable musicianship transmits to millions around the world\, reflected through his engagements both online and with the foremost orchestras and concert halls around the world. \n\nBeyond the performing arts\, his work has also contributed to philanthropy\, popular culture and educational technology. Initially coming to attention via the Yehudi Menuhin (2008) and Queen Elizabeth (2009) Competitions\, of which he was First Prize winner\, he has built a profile in Europe\, Asia\, and the USA as well as his native Australia both live and on disc. This showcase explores live audio-video performance with Vancouver’s Loscil\, and opening performances by Ry Moran (founding Director for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation) and Sarah Belle Reid (Victoria). \n\nThere is also a limited availability NeuzTec Festival Pass that provides access to Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday performances for $60 ($20 savings). \n\n\n\n\nLoscil (Vancouver)\n\nLoscil is the electronic music project of Canadian composer and multimedia artist Scott Morgan. For over 20 years\, Morgan has built a robust catalogue of work under the Loscil moniker\, loosely spanning the genres of ambient\, classical and electroacoustic music and released on the esteemed American imprint\, Kranky. Morgan has also produced numerous special projects\, books\, remixes and collaborations with other labels such as Ghostly International and Glacial Movements and artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Murcof/Vanessa Wagner\, bvdub\, Sarah Neufeld\, Daniel Bejar\, Rachel Grimes\, and Lawrence English. \n\nAs a touring entity\, Morgan has brought his live audio-visual performances to festivals worldwide including Mutek\, Le Guess Who\, LEV\, Gamma Fest\, Sled Island\, Today’s Art\, WOS\, Open Frame and Big Ears. \n\nSarah Belle Reid (Victoria)\n\nSarah Belle Reid is a performer-composer who plays trumpet\, modular synthesizer\, and an ever-growing collection of handcrafted electronic instruments. Her unique musical voice explores the intersections between contemporary classical music\, experimental and interactive electronics\, visual arts\, noise music\, and improvisation. In addition to her performance and compositional work\, Reid runs an online music education company dedicated to teaching sound synthesis and electroacoustic composition to professional and hobbyist musicians. She has mentored thousands of musicians from around the world in her online programs\, and is a frequent guest lecturer at notable institutions in the US and Canada including Stanford University\, University of Victoria\, California Institute of the Arts\, New York University (NYU)\, among others. She is currently Assistant Professor of Music Technology at the University of Victoria (BC)\, where she specializes in electronic music composition\, instrument design\, and human–machine interaction. \n\nRy Moran (Victoria)\n\nRy Moran is a composer and music producer whose work spans film\, television and live performance\, and a member of the Red River Métis. He was the founding director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and is Associate University Librarian\, Reconciliation\, at the University of Victoria. This drop shapes our world: it transports nutrients\, heat and living organisms\, while regulating our planet’s climate and ecosystems. It contributes to the fundamental process of life’s equilibrium. Drawing on data from the Global Conveyor Belt\, the vast ocean current that orchestrates the mixing of water from the five oceans and redistributes heat on a global scale\, Martin Messier underlines the fundamental role of water as a vital substance. Yet\, over the past two centuries\, human action has been shaking this fragile balance: the gradual slowing of this ocean current could trigger a major climatic upheaval\, threatening the entire chain of life. In this hypnotic performance\, the artist explores the tensions between the global currents that drive planetary equilibrium\, and the intimate currents that resonate within each of us. Fifteen suspended devices\, veritable kinetic sculptures\, orchestrate the flow of water particles in real time\, materializing oceanic dynamics. The patterns generated\, fed by data such as the temperature and salinity of the Pacific Ocean\, intertwine in a visual and sonic choreography. 1 drop 1000 years reveals itself as a masterful\, poetic ballet\, conveying the fragility of ecosystems and the delicate harmony that binds all things on Earth. \n\nAbout Martin Messier\n\nMartin Messier is a key figure in the Quebec and international art scenes\, Martin Messier orchestrates a dialogue between sound\, light and movement. His art of staging and his ability to combine technologies with natural elements (water\, smoke\, waves\, electricity…) have led him to develop a body of work on our perception of physical phenomena. He explores their manifestations\, from the most imperceptible to the most monumental\, through extraordinary devices. His performances and installations oscillate between order and chaos\, creating a contemplative tension that invites the audience into a synesthetic experience\, sometimes close to the spiritual. \n\nHis is presented by international institutions dedicated to live performance and contemporary art\, such as the Festival TransAmériques\, Trafó Budapest\, Arts Korea Lab Festival in Seoul and the Festival of contemporary arts in Prague. Martin Messier’s award-winning works (Prix Ars Electronica\, Japan Media Arts Awards\, World OMOSIROI Award\, etc.) have been programmed at major digital arts centers and festivals such as Mutek\, Transmediale\, Sonar and Nemo. \n\n\n\nMatt Robertson “Aequora” with Laser Oscilloscope by Chris Rozek\n\nAequora began as an exploration of additive synthesis — shaping and sculpting music entirely from sine waves at different frequencies and intensities. Rather than relying on existing software or plug-ins\, Matt generated and layered hundreds of sine waves by hand\, carefully balancing their volumes and envelopes over time. The result is a collection of soundscapes that are calm\, patient\, and quietly alive. \n\nThe live performance of Aequora will be accompanied by local artist Chris “Troll” Rozek\, who has created a lazer oscilloscope into which Matt Robertson’s sine waves will be feed to create a real time visual representation of Aequora’s sound design. \n\nMatt Robertson is a composer\, producer\, and musical director — three times Grammy-nominated. He has worked as musical director and arranger with FKA Twigs\, Björk\, Anohni\, Arca\, and The Cinematic Orchestra. \n\nHe has released eleven albums under his own name\, with works described by the music press as symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that’s cinematic in scale (Mixmag)\, evocative\, expansive\, and original (Electronic Sound)\, and Nils Frahm’s modern classical meets Jon Hopkins’ grainy techno (MOJO). Growing up on Jean-Michel Jarre and Jimmy Smith\, Matt graduated from the University of Surrey before working in London studios — learning to fix\, and later build\, his own synths. Working with a collection of vintage\, modern and DIY instruments\, he combines electronic production with classical composition and cinematic soundscapes. DESCRIPTION:This masterclass is in Alix Goolden Hall\, entrance at 900 Johnson Street. \nAdmission is free but donations are welcome. \n\nJoin acclaimed cellist Hayoung Choi for an inspiring masterclass featuring four outstanding cello students from the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of Victoria.  \nKnown for her exceptional musicianship\, expressive depth\, and compelling performances\, Choi brings a distinctive perspective to the study of the cello and the interpretation of the repertoire. \n\nAbout Hayoung Choi\n\nHayoung Choi is the First Prize Winner of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition for Cello. She has also received First Prize at the 3rd Krzysztof Penderecki International Cello Competition and the Johannes Brahms International Competition\, as well as awards such as the Landgrave of Hesse Prize\, the Leyda Ungerer Music Prize\, and the FENDI Music Award. Driven by a deep musical curiosity\, she is committed not only to the core cello repertoire but also to bringing lesser-known and rarely performed works to light. \n \nChoi made her debut at the age of twelve with Camerata Salzburg\, performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1. Since then\, she has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin\, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra\, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra\, Belgian National Orchestra\, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra\, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra\, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra\, European Union Youth Orchestra\, Kremerata Baltica Orchestra\, Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester\, Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra\, Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra\, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra\, KBS Symphony Orchestra\, Orquestra Amazonas Filarmônica and Filarmônica de Minas Gerais. \n \nA passionate chamber musician\, Choi has collaborated with celebrated artists such as Sir András Schiff\, Gidon Kremer\, Christian Tetzlaff\, and Mitsuko Uchida. She regularly performs cello and violin duo works with her younger sister\, SongHa. \n  \nBorn in Bielefeld\, Germany\, in 1998\, she attended the Purcell School in the United Kingdom and later studied at the Kronberg Academy and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid under Frans Helmerson\, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt\, and Ivan Monighetti. To honour the dedication and artistry of our student performers\, we kindly ask guests to enter the venue during applause breaks between performances. \n\n\n\nAbout the Winter Serenata\nThe Winter Serenata is an end-of-year concert presented by Victoria Conservatory of Music Voice Department\, which allows students the opportunity to perform repertoire that they have been working on during the year in an informal concert production setting. \n\nThis year the Classical Concert  (5:00pm to 6:30pm) will be comprised of students singing classical / Musical Theatre repertoire while the Contemporary Concert  (7:00pm to 9:00pm) will present students singing excerpts from the contemporary song repertoire. \n\n\n\n\nVenue Accessibility\nThe 900 Johnson Street entrance is wheelchair accessible at street level.
