SUMMARY:The Big IDEA: Sharing our music and telling our stories
DESCRIPTION:Obtain your tickets for The Big IDEA concert! Tickets are offered for free or pay what you can. Entry for this concert will be at the Victoria Conservatory of Music – 900 Johnson Street. \n\nThe Big IDEA: Sharing our music and telling our stories\nA series of events including performances and conversation in creating a more inclusive and equitable music space. These uplifting and informative\, faculty forward events focus on the principles of Inclusion\, Diversity\, Equity\, and Accessibility (IDEA) through the lens of the vibrant 2SLGBTQIA+ community. These events are offered through support from the City of Victoria. \nOur next events are Sunday\, May 5- Hope in 2SLGBTQIA+ community and Sunday\, June 23- Celebrate Pride! \n\n Sunday\, May 5 – Hope in the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community\nEnjoy an afternoon of beautiful music\, performed by Conservatory faculty who identify as members or allies of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This concert event will also feature a panel discussion with invited guests focusing on the importance of hope as well as how we all can nurture our mental health. \nFaculty and Special Guest Musical Performers\n\nMary Byrne\, flute \nAlexander Richards\, saxophone \nJany Lu\, piano \nRobert Holliston\, piano \nMarsha Elliott-Edwards\, flute \nAnna Bigland-Pritchard\, voice \nClaire Saunders\, dancer \n\nConservatory Chat\nInvited guests bring their experience and expertise to discuss the topic of hope in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as well as the importance of maintaining our mental health as we navigate our sometimes complicated lives. This Conservatory Chat will strengthen our sense of hope through exploration of the positive influences and support we experience. As well\, panelists will discuss ways everyone can strengthen and enhance their mental health. This panel discussion will conclude with a short Q & A for the panelists. \nThis conversation is moderated by Jack Edwards \n\nSpecial Guests\nAce Mann \nOriginally from the Unceded Traditional Territories of the K’ómoks First Nation\, they now live on the Unceded Coast Salish Territories of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples. A lifelong queer whose passions have always revolved around amplifying marginalized voices and providing support to their community\, Ace has volunteered for GSRD spaces for over 20 years from here to “Manitoba” and back. They are a trained neuroscientist\, psychotherapist\, and the president of the Victoria Pride Society. Beginning in academia\, Ace studied the immunology of brains at a molecular level. \nAfter losing a sibling to suicide\, they moved their studies into counselling as a way to study how brains protect themselves in a different way. Seeing the ripple effect that a person’s loss could have on a community\, Ace likes to take any opportunity to create a ripple effect of good; the potential impact for the mental health community and the people who would benefit from their work continues to be the driving force behind Ace’s passions. \nAce plans to work towards a Ph.D. in the near future; they are interested in syndemics and social structure and\, in particular\, the vast inequities faced by equity-deserving people who are disproportionately affected by mental and physical epidemics caused by societal systems of oppression. \nTogether with their partner\, Ace co-founded the Trans and Loved community on Instagram. As avid scuba divers\, Ace and their partner are happiest on\, in\, or under the water. Otherwise\, you can find Ace volunteering with VPS\, writing research papers\, hiking with their dog and partner. \n\nKatree Weick \nAs a white settler living and learning on the unceded lands of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples\, Katree is committed to anti-racism\, decolonizing\, and staying critical in their social work practice. They were born on the stolen lands of the Klallam peoples\, and her ancestors hail from Germany\, France\, England\, Belgium and Poland. They Identify as Queer using both they and she pronouns. She is Polyamorous\, Bisexual\, straight sized and deals with long term invisible chronic illness. As a Social Worker registered with “BC” and “Alberta\,” and as a human living in a gender rich and relationship diverse community\, She opened an alternative practice offering counselling support to folks who\, like them\, experience life from an anti-normative lens. They are a creative being at heart bouncing between different art forms and creative processes which fuel up her life\, and remind them that in all of the systemic challenges we face\, we can ignite change with our hearts\, our hands\, and our voices together. \n\nVenue Accessibility\nThe 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator located on the first floor: as you enter the building go down the ramp to your right and the elevator is on the left at the bottom. Performers include the young fiddlers of the BC Fiddle Orchestra and Old-time Danceband\, joined by alumni as they celebrate their 30th year! Daniel Lapp’s Folkestra! and Joy of Life Choir bring the excitement of spring to the stage with many favourite Canadian tunes. This year’s special guest performers will be backed by the mighty Joy of Life House Band of renowned local musicians. He has a timeless kind of cool that appeals to audiences of all ages. She has been Artistic Director and Production Manager for the festival Arts on the Fly for 12 years\, has booked tours in Europe and across Canada\, and is a regular session harmony singer for recording bands in Vancouver. \n\nSponsored by Peninsula Co-op \n \n\n\nVenue Accessibility\nThe 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. The Balcony is closed for this event. \n\n\n\nSongs of Love and War\n\nMarc Destrubé\, violin and artistic director\nKathryn Wiebe\, violin\nNatalie Mackie\, viola da gamba\nMarco Vitale\, harpsichord and organ \n\nThis concert will feature selections from Claudio Monteverdi’s eighth book of “madrigals” (‘Madrigali guerrieri\, et amorosi’)\, published in Venice in 1638 when he was seventy-one years old. They represent a significant evolution in musical style\, in which Monteverdi sought to express a new emotion in music. Earlier composers had only conveyed two of man’s three major passions\, the soft and the moderate; a third passion\, agitation (‘stile concitato’)\, was missing in his view. For this program\, the festival instrumental ensemble will be joined by a select group of emerging young singers\, specialized in this beautifully expressive music. \n\n\n\n \n\nConcert #1: Le Nuove Musiche 1: Naples and Rome – Frescobaldi to Scarlatti | February 27\, 7:30pm\, St. Barnabas Church *Not included in the Festival Pass \n\nConcert #2: Le Nuove Musiche 2: Venice and Milan – Monteverdi to Verdi | February 28\, 7:30pm\, Christ Church Cathedral \n\nConcert #3: Stile Moderno | February 29\, 11:00am\, Alix Goolden Performance Hall \n\nConcert #4: Sonate Concertate | March 1\, 7:30pm\, Alix Goolden Performance Hall \n\nChoral Evensong: Music Divine | March 3\, 4:00pm\, Christ Church Cathedral | Free Admission

DESCRIPTION:Entrance to the Alix Goolden Performance Hall is at 900 Johnson Street. The Balcony is closed for this event. \n\n\n\nSonate Concertate\n\nMarc Destrubé\, violin and artistic director\nKathryn Wiebe\, violin\nNatalie Mackie\, viola da gamba\nMarco Vitale\, harpsichord and organ \n\nThe flourishing of instrumental music in 17th century northern Italy gave composers free reign to explore a conversational (‘concertate’) style of composition\, exploring the varied colours and interplay between string and wind instruments. The sackbut (early trombone) came into its own at this time\, most notably in the works of composers associated with St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice such as Gabrieli and Castello\, who exploited its mellow timbre. At the same time the harp gained popularity as an accompanying bass instrument. We are thrilled to include two sackbuts and harp in the festival ensemble for this program. \n\n\n\n \n\nConcert #1: Le Nuove Musiche 1: Naples and Rome – Frescobaldi to Scarlatti | February 27\, 7:30pm\, St. Barnabas Church *Not included in the Festival Pass \n\nConcert #2: Le Nuove Musiche 2: Venice and Milan – Monteverdi to Verdi | February 28\, 7:30pm\, Christ Church Cathedral \n\nConcert #3: Stile Moderno | February 29\, 11:00am\, Alix Goolden Performance Hall \n\nConcert #5: Songs of Love and War | March 2\, 7:30pm\, Alix Goolden Performance Hall \n\nChoral Evensong: Music Divine | March 3\, 4:00pm\, Christ Church Cathedral | Free Admission
