SUMMARY:Tower of Song: A Creative Tribute To Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Concert starts at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7:00pm. \n The entrance to this concert is at the Victoria Conservatory of Music entrance at 900 Johnson Street. \n\n“I said to Hank Williams\, how lonely does it get?\nHank Williams hasn’t answered yet\nBut I hear him coughing all night long\nA hundred floors above me\, In the Tower of Song” \n\n\n\nWhen Leonard Cohen sang these words\, the Tower of Song was a metaphor for the inspiration that flows between songwriters\, each toiling away on their own\, but connected by their shared craft. Moved by this concept\, celebrated BC singer-songwriters Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone\, collaborated to produce a project that is a dialogue through song and a tribute to the legendary songwriter. Reimagining both rare and classic works of Cohen\, the duo have crafted a sound that resonates with both longtime Cohen fans and a younger audience. \n\nTower of Song began as a one-off tribute night for a packed house at Vancouver’s The Media Club\, and has since grown into a nationally touring folk duo. Produced by Garramone\, she invited fellow Victoria musician Oliver Swain\, and the show gave Swain and Garramone the chance to grow their musical chemistry. Together as Tower of Song the two have arranged some of Cohen’s timeless songs beautifully\, for two voices\, banjo\, string bass\, piano and guitar. \n\nEncouraged by the audience response\, they continued to present the show regionally\, and after several sold-out shows on Vancouver Island and a successful tour of BC and Alberta\, Tower of Song put “more power in the tower\,” recording their debut album In City and In Forest\, with Juno award winning producer Joby Baker. They have since toured twice across BC\, Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Manitoba\, Ontario\, and Quebec\, playing more than 200 shows to thousands of people at theatres\, festivals and folk clubs across Canada. Highlights include Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival\, West End Cultural Centre(Winnipeg) Aeolian Hall(London) the Rotary Centre for the Arts(Kelowna) and the Dave Dunnet Theatre(Victoria). \n\nVictoria Legend Daniel Lapp and multi-instrumentalist and producer Adrian Dolan will join the duo on stage! \n\n\n\n\n\n“The tunes are hauntingly lovely. Wonderful takes with close harmonies and violent re-rhythmings. Musically sound. Faithful by being strongly\, creatively Cohen\, and yet wholly their own.”\nJames N. Porter\, Professor Emeritus (Arts)\, York University

SUMMARY:The 16th Annual Margaret Abbott Memorial English Art Song Competition

Soprano Margaret Abbott’s performances of concert oratorio and operatic repertoire from all the musical eras were acclaimed throughout Canada. She sang with the Victoria Symphony and the Victoria Choral Society. Her performances on CBC included solo roles in the CBC premieres of Britten’s operas Albert Herring and Peter Grimes. Her family was closely connected to the Victoria Conservatory of Music for many years. Her children\, Norman\, Vivienne and Jocelyn\, were among the Conservatory’s first students. \n\n \n\n16th annual Margaret Abbott Memorial English Art Song Competition \n\nPlease note: Entrance to this event in Alix Goolden Performance Hall is at 900 Johnson Street. In the words of mentor John Hess\, he is “an immensely musical and sensitive player” with “a deeply inquisitive mind”. \n\nAlex has an MMus from the University of Western Ontario in Collaborative Piano\, an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano Performance\, and a BSc from the University of Guelph. He is currently on faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music in addition to working as a freelance pianist for students at the University of Victoria. \n\nHis experiences include work in art song recital\, playing as an opera répétiteur\, collaborating with choirs\, and exploring the instrumental duo & chamber music canons. Distinguishing himself as a performer and researcher\, Alex held a Canadian Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). His scholarship supported his work in art song recital programming. As the first phase of his research\, he created and performed song cycles formulated from disparate works by Rachmaninov and Brahms. For his second phase\, he delivered a stirring recital titled “Demons & Dichterliebe” that juxtaposed supernatural bewitchment and obsessive love. \n\nAmong his many projects\, Alex has been involved as a pianist and coach with the Accademia Europea dell’Opera (an experience funded by a Create and Explore Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts)\, the Victoria Conservatory’s Collegium program\, and the Western University Opera Workshop. These collaborations have culminated in performances of Le nozze di Figaro\, Serse\, and Die Zauberflöte. Moreover\, Alex has worked with singers and ensembles on numerous other arias\, opera scenes\, and choral performances. \n\nIn his spare time\, Alex enjoys singing the odd song\, performing in the chorus for Pacific Opera Victoria\, and going on hikes in search of birds. \n\n \n\nMark your calendar for upcoming voice competitions! \n\n41st Annual German Lieder Competition \n\nNovember 22\, 2023 \n\n17th Annual Italian and World Language Song Competition \n\nMarch 6\, 2024 \n\n30th Annual French Art Song Competition “La mélodie française” \n\nApril 2024.
