DESCRIPTION:The entrance to this event in Alix Goolden Performance Hall is at the Victoria Conservatory of Music entrance at 900 Johnson Street. \n\n\nAbout the event\n\nThe annual Spark to Flame concert\, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music\, is a cherished event that nurtures the talents of young\, emerging artists as they take their first steps toward professional musicianship. In this milestone year\, as the Victoria Conservatory of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary and 25 years of performances in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall\, the event promises to be more memorable than ever. \n\nOpen to all Conservatory students\, soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then guided by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the concert\, including special rehearsals with an orchestra.  \n\nThis year’s performance\, held on Saturday\, March 1\, 2025\, will spotlight seven exceptional student soloists\, accompanied by an ensemble of peers\, faculty\, and professional musicians for an evening of inspiring music. \n\nFree admission to this concert is made possible through the generous support of the Music Performance Trust Fund. \n \n\nStudent Soloists\nMichelle George\, piano\nMichelle is 15 years old and in grade 10. She has been playing the piano for 11 years and studying under Dr. Yoomi Kim for 8 years. Michelle was in the Collegium Young Artists Program for 3 years. She has received the Alexander & Ingrid Henderson Senior Piano Concerto Cup\, a silver medal in the Seattle International Piano Competition\,  the Dr. Milton Schlosser Award\, a Composition Award from the Greater Performing Arts Festival\, the Jamie Syer Scholarship\, and multiple other awards from the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and the Mid Island Performing Arts Festival. \n\n\nJoanne Jiang\, cello \nJoanne Jiang\, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student at St. Michaels University School\, studies cello under the guidance of Brian Yoon and began her cello journey with Karen Whyte five years ago.\nJoanne absolutely adores the deep\, rich and vibrant sound of the cello. Now in her fourth year with the Collegium program and third year in the Senior Collegium\, Joanne is also the principal\ncellist of the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. She is deeply honored to perform in the Spark to Flame showcase. \n\n\nSimi Luttrell\, piano\nA storyteller at heart\, pianist Simi Luttrell strives to evoke thoughtful and sensitive communication with his audiences. His playing has been described as “moments of emotional depth and intensity\, capturing the dramatic essence of the music.” Simi has performed as a recitalist and chamber musician in various festivals including the Victoria Summer Music Festival and Christ Church Cathedral Summer Recital Series. Currently\, Simi studies at the University of Victoria and Victoria Conservatory of Music with Professor May Ling Kwok\, and previously with Professor Bruce Vogt. \n\n\nIsidora Uhlman\, violin\nIsidora Uhlman is a grade 10 student at Oak Bay High School who started studying the violin two months before her fourth birthday and began to compose music at the age of six. Isidora’s most recent violin instructor was Simon MacDonald\, who she worked with for a total of three years. Isidora has been a member of the Collegium Young Artists Program for three years and has received numerous solo and composition awards from the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival. Isidora has won several music competitions\, including the 2020 Louis Sherman Concerto Competition\, the CFMTA Student Composer National Competition\, and the Ada Ulubeanu National Competition.  \n\n\nEmilia Vozian\, flute\nPrincipal Flute of last year’s Spark to Flame orchestra\, Emilia Vozian has been studying flute with Dr. Mary Byrne for the past 5 years and is a Grade 12 student at Mount Douglas Secondary School. Initially a piano student\, she first acquainted the flute in middle school band and is grateful to have started taking flute lessons through the Esquimalt Township Youth Mentorship Program. Since then\, she has performed at the Victoria Conservatory of Music\, Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival\, Victoria City Hall\, Gorge Park Pavillion Hiroshima and Nagasaki Lantern Ceremony\, an Oak Bay United Church Christmas Eve service\, local retirement homes\, and many other community settings. She is currently a third-year member of the VCM Senior Collegium Program\, playing primarily alto flute within a flute quartet.  \n\n\nSylvan Wilkinson\, saxophone\nSylvan Wilkinson is a student in the Advanced Independent Music Studies (AIMS) program\, studying under Dr. Alexander Richards. They are a recent graduate from the University of Victoria’s music program where they received their Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance. Throughout their degree they were a member of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony as well as The Purple Quartet. An active performer\, they were awarded the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship (2022) and received first place at the Performing Arts BC festival (2023) as well as second place at the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (2023). \n\n\nJack Yang\, piano\nJack Yang is 16 years old and is in grade 11 at Mount Douglas Secondary\, enrolled in the challenge program. He studies piano under the musical direction of May Ling Kwok\, and has played the instrument for more than 10 years. He has been a part of the Collegium Program for 3 years\, and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra for 2\, playing piano as well as clarinet. He has annually received numerous awards from the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival\, and in 2023\, his chamber group was successful in the provincial and national festivals. He has also received numerous different scholarships from the VCM\, as well as a first class honors with distinction mark on his level 10 RCM piano exam. \n\n\nConductor\nKimberley-Ann Bartczak\nA native of Montreal\, Kimberley-Ann Bartczak is a conductor\, pianist and vocal coach. Currently the Principal Coach and Accompanist at Pacific Opera Victoria\, Kimberley-Ann was the Resident Conductor and Répétiteur at Calgary Opera\, was on staff at Opera on the Avalon\, an alumna of Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program and has performed and conducted coast to coast across Canada as well as in the United States\, Mexico\, and Europe. \n\n\nVenue Accessibility\nThe 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. Let us come together to support these aspiring musicians on their journey. \n\n\nVoice Competitions\n\nThe Classical Voice Department offers six annual Song Competitions for current students of the Victoria Conservatory of Music to perform\, compete\, and receive feedback from renowned and respected adjudicators. \n\nFirst and Second Prizes as well as Honourable Mentions are available to be awarded for each competition. For nearly 45 years\, the Victoria Conservatory of Music has proudly represented Camosun College as its Music Department. \n\n\nDiploma in Music Performance – 2 years \n\nCertificate in Music Technologies – 18 months (online) \n\nCertificate in Music Creativity and Performance Foundations – 8 months \n\n\nAccredited by the BC Private Institute Training Branch of the BC Ministry of Advanced Education \n\n\nCertificate in Advanced Music Studies (AIMS) – 1 year\, Full time or part time study in one of four pillars: Performance\, Teaching\, Recording & Production\, and Business.  \n\n\n\n \n\nThe Postsecondary Department Info Night offers an opportunity to meet and hear from current performing students and working alumni from both Classical and Contemporary disciplines. DESCRIPTION:The entrance to this recital in Wood Hall is at 900 Johnson Street. \n\nAdmission by donation. \n\n\nJoin classical saxophonist Sylvan Wilkinson and collaborative pianist Jany Lu for an exciting afternoon of music showcasing works by Dahl\, Decruck\, Desenclos\, and Love. This recital is the culmination of Sylvan’s year of dedicated study through the Advanced Independent Music Studies (AIMS) program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. \n\nAIMS is a one-year accredited certificate program offering advanced music students part-time\, intensive\, and project-based practical training in one of four focus areas: Performance\, Teaching\, Technology and Creativity\, and Business. \n\nSylvan is thrilled to share what they’ve been working on throughout the year—don’t miss this dynamic and expressive program of music for classical saxophone! \n\n\nVenue Accessibility\nThe 900 Johnson Street entrance is at ground-level and wheelchair accessible. Doors open at 3:30pm \n\nLocation: Wood Hall\, entrance at 900 Johnson Street \n\nLək̓ʷəŋən territory \n\nDonations gratefully accepted at the door \n\nRSVP at www.surveymonkey.ca/r/sundayrecital \n\nRSVPs appreciated\, but not required \n\n\nThe first trans person to play a principal role on an American operatic stage\, Lucia Lucas is very proud to have performed for many of the most prestigious houses in the world including The Metropolitan Opera\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Deutsche Oper Berlin\, English National Opera\, Teatro Regio Torino and Daegu Opera House in Korea. Her primary discipline is Opera\, but Lucia is also a public speaker\, advocate for art\, and creates content through Music\, Video\, and Writing. In the medium of Opera\, Lucia most often performs in Germany\, the UK\, and the US. She performs Verdi\, Wagner\, as well as many new music and world premieres.
