Alana Hayes

Mezzo-soprano Alana Hayes completed her master’s degree in Musicology with Voice Performance at the University of Victoria, where she studied with Anne Grimm. Her research focuses on narrative in French Art Song of the late nineteenth century. She holds a Diploma in Music and AVCM Certificate from the Victoria Conservatory, where she studied with Nancy Argenta.

As a voice teacher, Alana is enthusiastic about fostering the development of healthy, sustainable singing technique. Believing that it is crucial for an instructor to adapt their approach to each student’s needs and goals, she seeks to learn from other instructors’ methods as well as from the teaching process itself. She aims to help students explore exciting repertoire and discover music that will further kindle their delight in singing.

A versatile and precise performer whose repertoire ranges from baroque to avant-garde, she has performed as a soloist and small ensemble singer with ensembles such as Pacific Baroque Festival, Sooke Philharmonic, Bach on the Rock, Palm Court Orchestra, and Capriccio Vocal Ensemble, and features regularly as a soloist with Victoria Baroque, with performances including St John Passion and Duruflé Requiem. She has appeared as Hannah After in Kaminsky’s As One, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro and Second Witch in Dido and Aeneas, all with the VCM Opera Studio, and in the title role in the VCM Summer Oratorio program’s production of Handel’s Solomon. She has also sung with the Victoria Composer’s Collective, performing new works by emerging composers, and appeared in Luciano Berio’s ambitious and challenging A-Ronne, as part of UVic’s New Music and Digital Media Festival.”
