Alastair Chaplin

Alastair Chaplin joined the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music in 2020. He is the trumpet section leader of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, of which he has been a member since 2015. He is also an active musician in Greater Victoria and across Vancouver Island, regularly performing with the Victoria Symphony, the Palm Court Light Orchestra, and other local ensembles.

Alastair has also performed with a number of leading Canadian orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and was twice a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He is also an experienced chamber musician and soloist, and is working to expand his stylistic repertoire to include commercial, lead, and big band playing.

Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Alastair completed his postsecondary studies in Toronto. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree and an Advanced Certificate from the University of Toronto and an Artist’s Diploma in Performance from the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has studied with some of Canada’s finest trumpet teachers including Andrew McCandless, James Spragg, Jeffrey Reynolds, and Eric Rupp.

Alastair is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher who believes in creating a personalized program based on the unique needs and musical ambitions of each student. He has experience working with students of all ages, and is also very interested in teaching the art of performance, which he believes is a skill unto itself.
