Gina Johnson

From a young age, Gina Johnson could be heard singing songs about anything from sandwiches to heartache. Now, a classically trained soprano, Gina has expanded her repertoire and musical skill. One way or another, she has always loved and been involved with music, and she now enjoys fostering this joy of music in her students. She obtained her Certificate in Music Teaching from the Victoria Conservatory of Music in 2019 and has been teaching a variety of students, with a focus on youngsters.

Gina provides a safe, supportive, and fun environment with a balanced approach to learning. Depending on the age and needs of the student, a lesson usually will include lots of movement, creative learning ideas, and singing together. She focuses on helping her students learn to sing healthfully and learn basic music theory. She is also a Linguistics student, and finds that to come in handy when explaining the body mechanics behind talking and singing. There are a lot of pieces to put together when learning a song, including words, rhythms, notes, emotional context, and style – Gina is prepared to help students through these complexities! She has prepared numerous young students for VCM Song Competitions and would be glad to help any student prepare for RCM exams, etc.

Gina obtained her diploma in Music Performance, completed at the VCM/Camosun College; during this education, she performed the role of  Pamina in Opera Studio’s 2019 production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. As well as solo music, Gina is passionate about choral music and small ensembles. Recently, she sang in an octet concert with Victoria Baroque, and has loved being involved in other similar projects. She was BC’s soprano representative in 2018’s National Youth Choir and believes that choirs provide a special environment to learn huge amounts of musical skill, and to experience real joy. In addition to music, Gina is a birth doula, a tree planter, and she enjoys spending time with her niblings.
