Kelly studied with Edward Parker and Robin Wood at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and with Alexander Kelly at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England (postgraduate) on a Vaughn Williams Trust Scholarship. He also studied Piano Pedagogy with Winifred Scott Wood at the VCM.
An active performer as recitalist and collaborative pianist in England, France, Germany and Canada, he is also much sought after as an accompanist and vocal coach. Mr. Charlton has also performed for many years in London as conductor and harpsichordist for the acclaimed Renaissance chamber choir ‘The New Friends’ Musick’ which he founded in 1990, and as Musical Director for ‘Shakespeare Celebrations’, a popular theatre company whose performances combine Shakespeare’s texts with thoughtful and innovative music, some of which are his own compositions. Since his return to Canada in 2006 he has performed extensively as pianist and chamber musician, collaborating with singers Barbara Livingston, Richard Margison and Susan Platts, brass players Marcus Hissen and Scott MacInnes and a variety of musicians in various recital series and summer academies.
Mr. Charlton successfully maintained a large private studio in London since 1980 with several of his students having since entered the profession as teachers and performers. He returned to his native Canada as a valued member of the piano faculty at the VCM and, in addition to his studio teaching, is much involved with the students in the VCM’s Collegium and teacher training programs. He is a faculty member at the VCM’s Summer Academy piano program and is also active as an adjudicator and clinician. Mr. Charlton has recently been appointed as Director of Music Ministry at the Victoria’s First Metropolitan United Church, and previously served as Assistant Director of Music at the Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria.
