A Musical Journey
Jack started playing the piano at age five because he wanted to fill his free time. He now studies with May Ling Kwok, is part of the Young Artists Collegium Program, and plays clarinet with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra (GVYO) – much less free time to fill these days!
Jack says his most memorable moment was when GVYO collaborated with the Victoria Symphony to perform Shostakovich’s monumental and turbulent 5th symphony:
“…it’s my only experience to date in such a professional and inspiring setting, and I will remember it for the rest of my life! ”
Choosing the Perfect Piece
For Spark to Flame, Jack has chosen to perform the first movement from Beethoven’s first piano concerto. He has been refining and performing the entire piece over the past few years, and hopes to make the audience forget their worries and fully immerse themselves in the magic of live music.
Jack describes his piano as containing many personalities, as it is capable of representing many instruments from the orchestra.
“[It is] very unpredictable/enigmatic…a wild creature that knows no limits.”
Inspirations and Aspirations
Jack is constantly inspired by musicians he watches perform and give masterclasses online.
Outside of music he loves spending my time with friends, and is working on getting his pilot’s license before graduation!

2025 Spark to Flame Student Showcase
The annual Spark to Flame program is presented through the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music and supports the development of young emerging professional artists.
Open to all students of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, soloists are selected through audition, and then offered the opportunity to be mentored by various Conservatory faculty over the weeks leading up to the concert, including rehearsals with orchestra.
The concert is a magical evening featuring seven very talented student soloists accompanied by fellow student peers, faculty artists, and other professional musicians.
