We are thrilled to announce that The Bannock Mechanics music video premiered at the Songs for Truth and Reconciliation event on September 29, 2024, in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. This remarkable project, created by 14 local Indigenous youth alongside facilitators from the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, is now available online for everyone to enjoy!
Over the course of four days (July 23-25 & 30, 2024), these talented youth collaborated to produce, write, and record an original song, as well as film a music video as part of the Hip Hop Summer Camp held on lək̓ʷəŋən Territory (Victoria, B.C.) facilitated by Nicole Ermineskin and other members of the Victoria Conservatory faculty. Daniel Brandes, Artistic Director of the School of Music Technology & Creativity at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, partnered with local indigenous artists, rappers, and educators Nicole Ermineskin and Alex Taylor-McCallum (aka Pindian) and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, to develop this new and very impactful camp for youth.
Both Alex and Nicole have since joined the Victoria Conservatory of Music Faculty and will be teaching hip hop programming in SD61 schools this year as part of the Conservatory’s Children’s Musical Journey outreach program.
