Pacific Baroque Festival – IN STILE CONCERTATO

John Walthausen  – organ

Thursday, 16 February 8pm
Christ Church Cathedral, Quadra at Rockland

There is a remarkable musical gem in Victoria, the Wolff organ in Christ Church Cathedral.  Lovingly crafted to provide a rich baroque sound, the organ is only matched by the space for its audience. Combine these with a dynamic young organist and fascinating concert program then  the critical ingredients present themselves for a memorable evening of music.

John Walthausen (USA) graduated from the Conservatoire National Superieure de Paris with highest honours, then received a Masters in historical keyboards from the famed Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland.  In 2012 he won first prize at the Pierre di Manchicourt International Organ competition in Béthune, France, a competition devoted mainly to North German music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Since then, he has been welcomed in many prestigious organ festivals around the world, including Oberlin Messaien Festival, Paris-des-Orgues, the Bach Toul Festival, the Internationale Meisterorganisten in Innsbruck and for the ‘Nuit de l’Orgue’, the grand finale of the Festival Toulouse des Orgues.

This concert will reveal how German composers such as Telemann and J.S. Bach kept abreast of the fashionable international musical trends, notably the Italian ‘stile concertato’.  Discover the invention and imagination in Bach’s transcription of a Vivaldi concerto; how a Telemann concerto inspired one of Bach’s cousins; enjoy a surprisingly modern Fantasia by Bach’s last pupil Müthel, and be enchanted by one of Bach’s late masterworks, The Canonic Variations on Von Hoch, composed as an audition piece for one of Germany’s most prestigious clubs for composers:

G.P. Telemann/ J.G. Walther – Concerto in C minor
J. S. Bach –Dies sind den heiligen zehn Gebot BWV 678
J.S.  Bach –Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam BWV 684
J.S.  Bach – Triosonata in e minor BWV 528
J.S.  Bach – Wir glauben all an einen Gott BWV 680
J.S.  Bach – Wir glauben all an einen Gott BWV 681
