Children’s Music Journey (Outreach Only)
The Children’s Music Journey is more popular than ever!
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the City of Victoria, BC Gaming, and to our individual donors, for making it possible for the VCM to provide the Children’s Music Journey into local Elementary schools through VCM’s outreach program.
One of the newest and most innovative approaches to learning music is made possible through the Children’s Music Journey. Award-winning computer software flips the traditional approach to learning music and puts the student in the composer’s chair from the first lesson. Famous composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Joplin come to life through animation, and lead children through creative music lessons that teach all the fundamentals of music through fun musical games and activities, including playing together as an ensemble using virtual instruments. Each child works at their own work station (SurfacePro Tablets) with attached USB Midi electronic music keyboard.
Each lesson also includes group participation in musical games and exercises that involve singing, clapping, and movement.
The Children’s Music Journey program is currently in use by over 80,000 participants world-wide. The Victoria Conservatory of Music has been providing this program in local Elementary Schools in the Greater Victoria area since 2013, funded through generous grants and donations received. Currently for the 2019-2020 academic year, the program is reaching over 350 children in 15 classes across 5 Elementary Schools in both the Victoria and Sooke School Districts!
In each CMJ school, the VCM trained program facilitator works in collaboration with school teachers to present the Children’s Music Journey program using Microsoft Surface Pro Tablets with usb mouse, connected to portable USB Midi electronic piano keyboards – all provided by the VCM. The program brings the many benefits of music to children in the community who would not otherwise have access to it. By continuing to build on partnerships with community organizations, while also increasing funding sources, our goal is to ensure that those in under-served communities can experience the joy and benefit of music, and that each school served, is able to develop their own sustainable model for the program, ensuring every child will have access.
