Meet Samuel Li!
One of the remarkable student performers at the February 29, 2020 Spark to Flame concert!
Samuel Li is a grade 9 student at Mount Douglas Secondary School Challenge Program. He began taking piano lessons at the age of 5, and has been studying with Roger Buksa at VCM since 2017. He performed in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and won many awards, including the Nathan Geminiano Memorial Cup and Award in 2018. He recently won the RCM Gold Medal for Level 9 piano. He has also participated in VCM Composition Clubs led by Christine Donkin. Outside of music, Sam enjoys playing soccer and reading, and excels in math and science at school.
Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?
Spark to Flame is a great opportunity to share my music with others, and to perform with an orchestra.
What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?
Concerto #21 in C major, K.467, 1st mvt: Allegro maestoso by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
What are your aspirations in music?
I hope to continue playing music throughout my life and sharing my music with others.
Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music
I was born and raised in Victoria. Currently I am a grade 9 student at Mount Douglas Secondary School Challenge Program. At school my favorite subjects are math and science. In my spare time I like reading, playing video games and soccer, as well as spending time with my friends.
Spark to Flame
The Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Spark to Flame program supports emerging artist’s development and is open to all students of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Selected through audition, students are given the opportunity to work with VCM faculty in the weeks leading up to the performance to develop their professional and artistic skills. The final concert is a magical evening featuring students performing with professional musicians and the VCM Senior String Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Timothy Vernon.
This year’s Spark to Flame student showcase is Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 7:30pm in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. We hope you’ll join us for this special evening!
