Meet Vanessa Tian!
One of the extraordinary student performers at the February 29, 2020 Spark to Flame concert!
Nine-year-old Vanessa Tian begun her piano studies with Ingrid Henderson at the Victoria Conservatory of Music at the age of five. She has been recognized as a promising young musician, winning the Junior Piano Trophy for outstanding musicianship from the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Music Festival, and receiving the Victoria Conservatory of Music Millicent Lavoy and Carl Weiselberger piano scholarships. In March 2018, Vanessa was selected to perform as a soloist with the Sidney Classical Orchestra. She has also contributed numerous performances at the VCM Piano Honours Concert, and through various studio recitals. Additionally, Vanessa volunteers her talent in her community, at the St. Mary’s Church Lenten concert series and In the VCM Garden Tour Fundraiser.
Vanessa is also studying the violin, taking part in various local summer academies through the VCM and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.
Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?
Spark to Flame allows to share my love for music with different people in the community. As well, it gives me the opportunity to play with a full orchestra, which is an amazing learning experience!
What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?
I will be performing the third movement of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 11, in D major. I chose this piece as it conveys a lively and uplifting mood, while presenting some technical challenges that I enjoy working on.
What are your aspirations in music?
I would love to, one day, have the chance to participate in international competitions such as the Chopin Piano Competition and the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. As well, it would be a dream to study at a prestigious music school such as Juilliard, or the Curtis Institute of Music.
Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music
Outside of my musical pursuits, I take part in Victoria Synchro’s Provincial Competitive Stream Synchronized Swimming program. Currently, I am rehearsing both duet and group routines, for our upcoming Spring competitions. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels, and spending time by the ocean.
Spark to Flame
The Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Spark to Flame program supports emerging artist’s development and is open to all students of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Selected through audition, students are given the opportunity to work with VCM faculty in the weeks leading up to the performance to develop their professional and artistic skills. The final concert is a magical evening featuring students performing with professional musicians and the VCM Senior String Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Timothy Vernon.
This year’s Spark to Flame student showcase is Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 7:30pm in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. We hope you’ll join us for this special evening!
