Home for Christmas Student Soloist Evan Overman

Our favourite Christmas tradition is right around the corner, Daniel Lapp’s Home for Christmas Concerts! Every year Daniel Lapp choses a student to be a special soloist at the Home for Christmas concerts. This years student soloist is Evan Overman, who will perform on the trumpet. We caught up with Evan as he is preparing for the holiday shows!

Tell us about yourself

“I started taking piano lessons from my mom when I was 5 years old, and have been learning music ever since. I started learning to play the trumpet when I was 10, after hearing the Star Wars soundtrack, and other music by John Williams. A few of the ensembles I play in are the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, Spoke Philharmonic, Hampton Orchestra, and the BC Brass Collective. Though trumpet is my main instrument, I also enjoy singing and playing piano.”

What program are you enrolled in at the VCM?

“I’m in my second year of the Camosun College/ VCM Diploma in Music Performance.”

Have you performed at Home for Christmas before? Why are you excited to perform this year?

“I have once, as a part of the VCM Brass Choir. I’m excited to be a part of the fun again, there’s such a great sense of community.”

What are your aspirations in music?

“I would love to play in a professional symphony orchestra. I’ve also recently become interested in composing.”

This year’s performance brings together nearly 200 current students and VCM alumni to share a variety of Canadian Coast-to-Coast Christmas inspired tunes. The concerts include performances by the B.C. Fiddle Orchestra, Folkestra!, and the Joy of Life Choir, accompanied by the renowned Shiny H’ornaments, Swing’n Sheperds, and the Strings of Lights house band. Highlights include special performances by founder and director, Daniel Lapp, and Nicholas Fairbank, who will play “Cassie”, Alix Goolden Performance Hall’s beloved 1910 Casavant pipe organ. Also joining us this year is special guest and B.C. Fiddle Orchestra Alum, Kendel Carson. Kendel has performed with the folk music band, The Paperboys, and is currently in the Beautiful Beautiful Band with Alan Doyle.

There’s no better way to warm the heart this Christmas Season than at Daniel Lapp’s Home For Christmas! We hope you’ll join us!
