TRENT FREEMAN – Joy of Fiddle
Trent Freeman is an innovative musician whose unique blend of groove, in-depth harmony, captivating melodies and personal writing style set him apart from many others. He has won national awards with his groups The Fretless, experimental electronic duo Speaker Face, and with his solo record Rock Paper Scissors. Rooted in tradition, but with a modern ear for experimentation and exploration, Trent’s music stretches the boundaries of genre, and shatters expectation.
Over the past few years, Trent has become a sought after side man, touring across North America and Europe with artists such as The Wailin Jennys, John Reischman, Jenny Ritter, The Duhks, and countless others. As a session musician, he has added his violin and musical touch to records ranging in genre from bluegrass to hip-hop, classical to jazz. Some recording highlights include Andrew Collins, Helen Austin, Wyclef Jean and John Reischman.
With The Fretless, Trent has toured internationally, performing at world-class venues such as the Luxembourg Philharmonic, and countless festivals including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Marioposa Folk Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest and the Festival of Small Halls. The group has released 3 albums and has won Ensemble of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and are recent Juno Award winners. Trent’s solo jazz record Rock Paper Scissors was also awarded Solo Instrumental Album of the Year at the CFMA’s.
Speaker Face is new sound on the electronic music scene, coining the term Deep Folk and combining strings and nature sounds with electronics, synths and computers. The band has won awards not only for their music but for a music video as well, which was also filmed, directed and edited by Trent. As a director, Trent has produced music videos for some of North America’s top musicians. These include Jaron Freeman-Fox, Dela May, The Lonely Heartstring Band, The High Bar Gang, Fish & Bird, Eli West and Bill Frisell.
