BMus, MMus (Julliard)
Walter Prossnitz was born in Victoria and studied at the VCM with Dr. Robin Wood from the age of 10 until 18. In that time, he played his first concerts with the Victoria Symphony and other orchestras, and won First Prize at the National Music Festival. He went on to study in Vienna and New York, where he received Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Julliard School and won First Prize in the Montreal Symphony Competition. As a student, he also had the opportunity to undertake a concert tour of China where, in a number of cities, he was the first Western pianist to appear since the Maoist Revolution in 1949.
For the past 25 years, Walter has made his home in Switzerland, pursuing a career as a performer and teacher. In all, he has performed over 40 concerti with orchestras in nine countries. Recitals and chamber music have taken him to Paris, Budapest, Tokyo, Toronto, and many other cities around the world. He now looks forward to the new challenges facing him as Head of the VCM Keyboard Department, a position to which he brings almost 30 years of teaching experience, from first lessons to masterclasses tackling the most demanding works in the repertoire.
