Last Sunday afternoon 416 family, friends and music fans filled our Alix Goolden Performance Hall to hear some incredible playing and celebrate the 60th birthday of Robert Holliston. Known as Victoria’s Musical Treasure Robert more than lived up to that name with his ability to connect with his audience, engage with every word, gesture and most certainly every note played.
Robert was joined by a few of his incredibly talented friends beginning with sopranos Nancy Argenta and Ingrid Attrot performing Mendelssohn, Brahms and Songs from the North Country by Simon Kent.
The audience was then taken on a journey by Robert and Tzenka Dianova as they performed Fantasia in f minor for piano four-hands.
On the occasion of Robert’s 60th birthday and in honour of the man who has so richly expanded and enhanced our lives, the VCM dedicated its new Yamaha concert grand piano to him. Pictured below is Robert signing this beautiful instrument. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to help secure this wonderful gift for both Robert and our school. If you would like to make a donation you still can by calling the VCM 250.386.5311 or online here: Canada Helps
The second half saw Gwen Thompson (violin) and Paula Kiffner (cello) join Robert for Brahms Piano Trio in B Major, Op 8. Robert played the new Yamaha concert grand piano during the second half.
The room was filled with a warmth and joy that entwined with the music and then culminated with the singing of Happy Birthday. Party favours sounded, cake and wine were served and everyone involved felt the night couldn’t have been more perfect.
