Alfons has been performing, writing, recording and teaching music for over twenty years. His passion for improvisation started at the same time he picked up the trumpet. This journey of self-discovery led him to Toronto where he studied at Humber College and lived as a freelance trumpet player immersing himself in many different genres ranging from free-improvisation to Afro Cuban.
Alfons has a vast array of training from highly esteemed educators such as Don Thompson, Don Johnson, Lou Ranger, Pat Labarbera and Ian McDougall. He recently furthered his education in music at the University of Victoria where he completed a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory (2014). Alfons teaches trumpet with a focus on improvisation to students of all levels and ages and stresses the importance of being a versatile musician. The lessons, which are individually suited to each student, include ear-training and aural development in conjunction with functional reading skills and technique.
Alfons has had the opportunity to perform in many different settings with a wide range of prominent artists including Maria Schneider, Hugh Fraser, Dave Douglas, Rob McConnell, and Ian McDougall. He has toured across Canada with jazz and rock bands including the jazz trio Zeebradonk. Alfons has participated in the Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto and Guelph International Jazz Festivals and has performed with a wide variety of ensembles in Victoria and Toronto including The Victoria Jazz Orchestra, The Scott White Quartet, The Woodchoppers Association, The Sooke Philharmonic, The Civic Orchestra, and various pit orchestras. Highlights of his career include performing with David Foster for his 25th Anniversary Charity Fundraiser. In the summer of 2014 Alfons played trumpet, bass guitar and trombone at Caravan Farm Theater in an original production entitled The Tragical Comedy of Punch and Judy. Alfons resides in Victoria with his family where he continues to be an active musician and educator.
