Michael Drislane is an accomplished pianist, and offers piano lessons to students of all ages and levels. Using humour and metaphor, Michael is able to break down complex ideas into ‘ah-ha’ moments. He can take a student from a beginner to an advanced level.
Michael has a Masters degree in Piano Performance from UBC, a Bachelors degree in Piano Performance from UVIC, and a Diploma in Piano Performance and Teaching from Camosun College. He studied under Dr. Robin Wood, Cary Chow, and Dr. Sara Buechner, and had masterclasses with Jane Coop and Rena Sharon. Michael also pursued advanced harpsichord studies (repertoire and continuo playing) under Dr. Doreen Oke (UBC).
In addition to the piano, Michael studied viola under Jaroslav Karlovsky and Sydney Humphreys. Playing a string instrument at an advanced level has broadened Michael’s approach to music and enables him to teach his students to engage with ensembles and orchestras.
Another of Michael’s main interests is composing. Having studied under Stephen Brown and David Clenman, Michael’s compositions have been performed as part of Canada Music Week and presented in concert by the St. Cecelia Orchestra (now the Sidney Classical Orchestra). For those students who wish to compose, Michael is an excellent guide.
What ultimately sets Michael apart from so many classical musicians however is his extraordinary ability improvise in many styles. Michael has used this talent in collaboration with dancers, and for the accompaniment of silent films, in addition to performances at special events where the audience chooses the style, etc., of the improvisation. Michael’s wealth of practical experience will benefit students of any level in their pursuit of excellence.
