Recording and Production Project Award

About

Launched in May 2019, the Recording & Production Project Award for Emerging Artists is administered through the School of Music Technology and Creativity. It is intended to support any current student of the Victoria Conservatory of Music*, developing as an emerging music artist, who aspires to create and produce a professional quality recording of themselves and/or other emerging music artists, through a personal or collaborative creative and entrepreneurial project.

*A current student is defined as being registered during the year of application and continuing until project completion, for regularly occurring classes, ensembles, or lessons with a member of Conservatory faculty.

The award amount is calculated at 80% of the proposed project budget, up to the maximum award amount of $1300.

For the 2024/25 academic year, projects may commence as of September 2024 and must be completed and submitted by April 30, 2025.

The 2024-25 Award Recipient will be announced publicly at the Conservatory’s Annual Awards Day Ceremony on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 7:30pm in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. They will also be posted on the Conservatory’s website under the School of Music Technology and Creativity, and via Conservatory social media.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 16 years old as of the Application Deadline.
  • Be a current student of the Conservatory as defined above.
  • Have 100% creative control over the proposed project, including project design and recordings produced.
  • Adhere to international intellectual property rights standards and cultural ownership protocols.
How to Apply

Complete our online application. The application includes:

  • Project Description, including project objectives, all individuals involved with the project including names, relationship to the Conservatory (if any), and their respective roles/tasks with the project.
  • About the Applicant (in point form) stating the applicant’s musical training, and any knowledge/ skills/ experience accumulated to date in the area of recording and production.
  • Impact Statement the project may have on the applicant’s development as an Emerging Artist, and how the project might contribute to the Greater Victoria music culture.
  • Project Timeline, including anticipated start and completion dates, as well as dates of significant milestones for the project.
  • Project Budget, listing anticipated expenses, and sources of revenue beyond the award funding requested. Note: The amount awarded will be 80% of the proposed budget expenses up to the maximum award amount of $1300.
  • Project Completion Statement, to be submitted to the Office of the Dean when the project is complete, and including a copy of the completed project, and a short (500 word approx.)narrative on successes and challenges encountered during the project work.

Application Deadline

Applications are accepted until May 6, 2024.

How the Award is Paid Out

The award is paid in two equal parts, the first part paid in September 2024, and the final part paid once the completed project has been submitted to the Office of the Dean. The award amounts are credited directly to the recipient’s Registration account at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and paid out to the recipient upon request.

Award recipients may be requested to provide/confirm their date of birth and SIN to receive this cash award.
