Summer Intensive Program: Cabaret

SIP Cabaret 600px

July 21-26, 2025

This intensive non-auditioned workshop is designed for adult singers with an interest in cabaret performance and music theatre, as well as for classical singers interested in developing crossover technique and repertoire. Some previous vocal training and performing experience is an asset but is not compulsory.

Limited to 20 singers and 10 pianists; early application is advised. Singers do not have to apply with a pianist – a collaborative partner will be assigned, or a professional collaborative pianist will be provided. Repertoire suggestions and scores will be sent to participants in advance of the program. Each singer will prepare two songs – uptempo and ballad — to perform in class and at the final concert.

Singers and Pianists

This intensive encompasses daily masterclasses, lessons with faculty, classes in acting and performance practice, and a performance to conclude the week. This year’s course is Post-War Cabaret, focused on the repertoire of the cabarets and nightclubs of New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris in the 1940s to 1960s. This is the era of jazz standards drawn from early musical theatre, comedy songs and parodies, the Golden Age of Broadway, and the storytelling songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Kurt Weill — a wealth of fabulous material to explore and perform!

The faculty brings a wealth of experience in a wide range of genres, from Broadway to cabaret and commercial recording, and will work with the singers individually and in masterclass to develop their confidence and polish their performance as singing actors. Faculty will include Tracey Moore, a Broadway veteran and New York cabaret performer who is also an accomplished voice actor, bringing her talents to animated work such as Sailor Moon and the Care Bears, and Brenda Morie, jazz vocalist and recording artist who has been heard on movie soundtracks and television commercials and toured with pop artists such as Nancy Sinatra. Other special guest instructors to be announced. Pianists will work with at least one singer and receive coaching on creative collaboration and appropriate style.

Adult pianists with an interest in jazz and music theatre and experienced in collaborative work with singers are also welcome to participate in the course, but due to the complexity of the repertoire, pianists are asked to submit an audition video for acceptance into the program. Please contact the Artistic Director, Nancy Curry, at [email protected] for more information.
