Summer Intensive Program: Guitar at UVic

SIP Guitar 600px

August 6-10, 2024

This course is presented with the support of Victoria Guitar Society.

The Summer Intensive Guitar Program invites guitar lovers of all ages and abilities* to explore the art of the classical guitar with Conservatory faculty and international guests. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced players will find engaging activities including individual lessons, technique sessions, guitar orchestra, masterclasses and recitals. This is a relaxed, focused, and encouraging learning environment where you may expand and refine your guitar skills with Canada’s emerging stars and visiting artists. This year we are delighted to welcome faculty Simon Farintosh in a special evening concert through the Victoria Guitar Society.

*At least one year of guitar study is recommended. Learners under the age of 12 may consider the Mini Maestros program.

Mini Maestros

The Victoria Guitar Society’s outreach activity includes the introduction of a new initiative: Mini Maestros – a special program for pre-teens and young persons (ages 8-12), taught by experienced instructor Nicole Payie. We provide a ¼ or ½ size Cordoba guitar (with signed instrument agreement) for this first-come, first-serve program that helps to introduce guitar to young persons; all SI-G events including concerts and classes are open to Mini Maestros.

This program can be an adjunct to private music lessons introducing ensemble playing, or serve as an introductory music course. Designed to eliminate the footwork/guesswork and financial outlay for parents at the music store, we provide the fractional (smaller scale) guitars, which students of this age require based on their size and which they quickly grow out of.

Participant fee: no cost. This is second year this program is offered through a generous grant from the Stober Foundation.
