Meet Alex Chernata!

One of the student performers at the 2022 Spark to Flame Student Showcase! Alex Chernata Spark to Flame 2022

Alex Chernata was born in Cherepovets, Russia and migrated to Canada in 2005. His studies on the clarinet began shortly after.  Currently enrolled in the performance program at the University of Victoria, his future musical goals include composition, teaching, and a performance career that will include solo, chamber, and orchestral playing. Furthermore, he is very interested in historical instruments and their performance practices, especially that of the 17th and 18th century clarinets.

Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?

I really wanted to materialize my interpretation of Mozart’s work with a chamber ensemble.

What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?

I will be performing the first movement of W.A. Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622. I chose the work not only because it is standard repertoire, but also how intuitive it is to play. I enjoy playing the lyrical lines and interpreting the many characters and ideas.

What are your aspirations in music?

My future musical goals include composition, teaching, and a performance career that will include solo, chamber, and orchestral playing. I am also very interested in historical instruments and their performance practices, especially that of the 17th and 18th century clarinets.

Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music

I am a lover of the great outdoors – hiking, ice-fishing, skiing, and traditional archery in particular.
