Meet Channing Mar!

One of the student soloists at the 2023 Spark to Flame Student Showcase!

Channing Mar

Channing Mar has given solo recitals and has performed in chamber groups and ensembles around Victoria. Channing graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Victoria in 2021 and is continuing her advanced studies with Patricia Kostek at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. She currently teaches clarinet at St. Margaret’s School and Tapestry Music. Channing is looking forward to performing the Krommer clarinet concerto with the VCM chamber orchestra at the Spark to Flame concert in February!

Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?

I really enjoyed performing in the 2021 Spark to Flame orchestra. A colleague and friend was a soloist that year and I was inspired! I also thought it would be a good challenge/performance goal to work towards.

What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?

I’ll be performing the first movement from Concerto in Eb Major, op. 36 by Franz Krommer. I chose it because it’s a really fun piece to play with varying colours and playful characters within the lines and sections throughout the piece.

What are your aspirations in music?

My aspirations in music are to continue building up a teaching career as well as giving solo recitals, performing chamber music and maybe one day have a position performing in an orchestra!

Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music.

I like to create prints and greeting cards! Along with a career in music, I hope to run a small business as well!

2023 Spark to Flame Student Showcase

The annual Spark to Flame program is presented through the Ann George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music and supports the development of young emerging professional artists.

Open to all students of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, soloists are selected through two rounds of auditions. The Spark to Flame program offers soloists the opportunity to be mentored by various VCM faculty over the weeks leading up to the concert, including rehearsals with orchestra.

The concert is a magical evening, and this year’s performance on Saturday February 25, 2023, will feature six very talented student soloists chosen this year to be accompanied by the VCM’s Chamber Orchestra, consisting of fellow student peers who are joined by faculty artists and other professional musicians.

Admission is free. Please use the Victoria Conservatory of Music entrance at 900 Johnson Street. Supported by the Henwood Family Foundation and BC Gaming. Learn more and read the bios of the six student performers here.
