Meet Tasmin Carlow-Ujiie!

One of the student performers at the 2022 Spark to Flame Student Showcase! Tasmin Carlow Ujiie Spark to Flarme Concert

Tasmin started playing the cello with Ms Judith Fraser at the Vancouver Academy of Music at the age of five. Shortly after, Ms Fraser and Ms Nicki Steida introduced her to chamber music, and discovered her love for the cello through performing with her friends. The highlight of her chamber music experience was placing second at the Friends of Chamber Music with The Anonymous Four and winning at the BC Provincials with Trio con Brio. She moved to Victoria two years ago and is currently studying with Mr. Brian Yoon at the VCM. She is in grade 12 at Royal Bay Secondary School and, outside of music, she enjoys dancing, watercolour painting, and baking. She is excited to study biology at university next year. Tasmin is honoured for the opportunity to perform in Spark to Flame.

Why did you apply to perform at Spark to Flame?

I felt that it would be an unforgettable experience to play with an orchestra in front of an audience.

What piece are you performing and why did you choose it?

I’m playing the CPE Bach cello concerto in A minor. I have always enjoyed Baroque music because it is challenging and inspiring.

What are your aspirations in music?

Music enriches me, and I hope to continue to appreciate it for the rest of my life.

Tell me a bit about yourself, outside of music

I’m in grade 12 at Royal Bay Secondary School, and I’m hoping to attend the University of Victoriato study science next year. My dream is to go to New Zealand for graduate work and become a biologist. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music and baking.

2022 Spark to Flame Student Showcase

This in-person, live concert is a magical evening of exciting works for 7 student soloists accompanied by the VCM Chamber Orchestra and led by Maestro Timothy Vernon. VCM faculty artists and local professional musicians join our students to, once again, produce the high-caliber Spark to Flame performance experience that fuels the love of music in our emerging young musicians and audience members alike.
