Volunteer Application Form

When you volunteer at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, you will:

  • Be a part of our community and meet, work with, and experience what it’s like to be part of a community of musicians and music lovers.
  • Be a part of our Venues team and help present amazing performances in the beautiful Alix Goolden Performance Hall and Wood Hall.
  • Be a part of our Development team for special events including the Mother’s Day Garden Tour (a tour of the most beautiful and interesting gardens in Victoria) and donor appreciation receptions.
  • Have the Victoria Conservatory of Music as a reference. Whether you’re looking to apply for a new job or for scholarships and bursaries, you’ll be able to add us to your list of supporters.

Venues and Events Volunteers

Usher

  • Greet patrons, artists’ guests, sponsors, and VIPs.
  • Scan tickets/passes.
  • For Admission by Donation events, encourage and accept donations (involves cash/card handling). May be asked to assist with end of night count and reconciliation with staff.
  • Assist guests to find their seat (reserved seating), or direct to available seating (general admission).
  • Ensure aisles are unobstructed and remain clear for emergencies.
  • Provide directions to patrons lining up for concerts, manage crowd control.
  • Answer inquiries – eg. washroom location, entrance/exit, upcoming events and basic information.
  • Assist with post-concert clean up and signage removal.
  • Excellent customer service skills required; must be friendly, personable and professional.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication in English; additional languages are considered an asset.
  • Usually will be seated inside the venue during the event in a designated seat, available to support patrons as needed, but may be posted outside of the hall depending on event needs.
  • Reports to Front of House Manager and/or designated Supervisor.

Concession and Bar Assistant

  • Please note:
    • This position entails cash and card transactions and management.
    • When bar service is involved, volunteers must have either Serving it Right or Special Event Server credentials (depending on number of attendees).
  • Conduct inventory management counts and monitor inventory levels throughout service.
  • Ensure efficient, accurate, and friendly customer service pre-show and at intermission.
  • Fulfill intermission pre-orders (if applicable).
  • Maintain a clean and orderly concession environment throughout and following service.
  • Assist with the set up and tear down of concession areas.
  • For events with bar service:
    • Verify customer identification to ensure they are of legal drinking age and follow all related regulations.
  • Reports to Venues Manager, FOH Manager, Bar Manager, Event Host, or designated supervisor.

Production Crew

  • Set up and dismantle stage elements prior to and after the concert.
  • Contributes to the efficient movement and placement of chairs, music stands and other stage equipment at the various concert venues
  • Assist with all venue logistics
  • Perform needed set changes
  • Must be a team player and be able to follow complex, detailed instructions
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical tasks including: moving equipment, loading and unloading trucks, and heavy lifting, if required
  • Accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment
  • May be required to attend dress rehearsals and set-up in order to become familiar with the duties related to the concert/event
  • Previous stage experience an asset
  • Reports to Venues Manager, House Technician, Event Host, or designated supervisor

Greenroom Attendant

  • Act as a steady point of contact for artists at our events – for larger groups, check in the artists upon arrival and direct to appropriate green room or studio.
  • Remain at the designated greenroom before, during, and after the concert to ensure security of the space and controlled entry for authorized artists and personnel only.
  • Kindly direct patrons away from the greenroom or related hallways.
  • Ensure artists remain undisturbed and comfortable in the venue space.
  • Reports to Front of House Manager and/or designated Supervisor.

Please note that depending on the event, it is possible that not all of these positions will be available and/or may be combined (ie Usher and Concessions).

Reception Support Volunteer

  • Greet guests upon arrival and provide a professional first impression.
  • Assist with guest sign-in and wayfinding.
  • Support coat check operations, including receiving and returning items.
  • Assist at the bar as directed (e.g., glassware support, restocking, service assistance under staff supervision; required certifications will be communicated in advance if applicable) SIR is beneficial but not required.
  • Clear tables of used dishes, glassware, and napkins to maintain reception areas.
  • Restock food and beverage stations throughout the event.
  • Assist with reception set-up prior to guest arrival.
  • Assist with clean-up following the reception.
  • Respond to basic guest inquiries as needed.
  • Reports to Event Lead, or designated Supervisor.

Please note that depending on the event, reception-related duties may be combined with other volunteer roles and adjusted based on event needs.

Overview
The Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Mother’s Day Musical Garden Tour is back for its 43rd year! Volunteer as a Garden Sitter and enjoy a 3.5-4-hour shift at one of nine stunning, hand-picked private gardens throughout Greater Victoria. You’ll be seated at a table outside with one other volunteer. No garden knowledge required. Learn more about the event at vcm.bc.ca/garden-tour.

Volunteers receive a FREE two-day pass, giving you exclusive access for the rest of the weekend.

Garden Scout

  • Have interest in garden design and style, with a basic knowledge of plants and gardens.
  • Scout for new and exciting gardens to feature for our annual garden tour.
  • Book appointments with owners of potential gardens to view the gardens and discuss some of the expectations and benefits of hosting the tour.
  • Distribute the prospective garden checklist to potential garden owners and ensure the completion of this form, which includes the garden descriptions and contact information.
  • Follow up with the garden owners as needed.
