Marlo-Karakas

We’re thrilled to introduce Marlo Karakas, one of the soloists performing at this year’s Spark to Flame Student Showcase on Friday, February 21, 2026!

Marlo has been studying at the Conservatory for about 6 years. He is currently in his second year of the Postsecondary Diploma Program, where he studies with Jennifer Turner. In the last year, he has placed first in the French and Oratorio competitions and second in the English and Aria competitions. In addition to his work as a soloist, Marlo is also a choral scholar with the St John the Divine Chorus under David Stratkauskas.

“Dido’s Lament is incredibly special to me—it was one of the first solo pieces I ever sang. I remember performing it in a middle school choir talent show and dramatically acting out the death scene at the end! It’s become one of my favourite arias, and I’m so excited to perform it at Spark to Flame.”

When Marlo isn’t performing, you can often find him at the pottery wheel, making mugs and bowls—an artistic outlet that grounds him and allows for playful creativity. He’s inspired by the French composer Francis Poulenc and emphasizes storytelling in every performance, conveying emotion through every note he sings.

“When I sing, my goal is to envelope the audience in the story. The voice is already such an expressive instrument, and I spend a lot of time analyzing each poem to make sure every idea and image gets its moment.”

Join Marlo and six other talented soloists for an unforgettable evening of music, expression, and inspiration!
