Kyron Basu, baritone, has taught at the Victoria Conservatory of Music since September, 2016. He earned his Diploma in Music and AVCM in Vocal Pedagogy earlier that year, studying with Ingrid Attrot (voice) and Nancy Argenta (pedagogy). As a teacher, Kyron strives to provide a supportive and encouraging lesson atmosphere to help students unlock their musical potential, regardless of experience level. He emphasizes the development of a free, healthy vocal technique capable of expressing a diverse range of music.
An enthusiastic performer, Kyron sings regularly in the Victoria area. As a soloist, he has appeared with groups such as Fretwork, the Victoria Baroque Players, Victoria Children’s Choir, Victoria Philharmonic Choir (Bach and Pergolesi’s Magnificat settings). He has sung in three productions of the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Opera Studio program, and performed solos in the Conservatory’s Summer Oratorio program (Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus) of 2016. He was recently featured as the bass soloist in the University of Victoria Chorus and Orchestra’s performance of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor. Kyron has also sung the role of Tristan in the Vancouver Island Performers Guild’s production of Flotow’s Martha.
Kyron’s ensemble engagements have included two productions with the Pacific Opera Victoria chorus (Verdi’s Otello and Simon Boccanegra), the chorus of Bach’s St. John Passion with the Victoria Baroque Players, and singing as a section leader with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir during the 2016-2017 season. Kyron is also a choral scholar at Christ Church Cathedral where he sings with the St. Christopher Singers.
In September, 2017, Kyron will be entering his final undergraduate year at the University of Victoria, working towards his BMus in Vocal Performance in the studio of Benjamin Butterfield.
