This year, the Gary Karr Young Artists Performance Academy celebrates 20 years of inspiring exceptional young musicians.
Founded in 2006 by pianist and educator Dr. Jamie Syer, the Academy has spent two decades fostering artistic excellence, collaboration, and lifelong friendships. Today, the Academy proudly carries the name of renowned double bassist and mentor Gary Karr, whose legacy of curiosity, mentorship, and musical connection continues to inspire new generations of young artists.
For two decades, Academy students have developed not only as soloists and chamber musicians, but also as creative thinkers, collaborators, and leaders. Through weekly coaching, performance opportunities, and mentorship from outstanding faculty, students gain the skills and confidence to thrive both in music and in life.
The Academy’s impact can be seen in the accomplishments of its alumni. Graduates have earned placements at leading institutions including the University of Victoria, McGill University, the New England Conservatory, the Peabody Institute, the Curtis Institute of Music, and The Juilliard School. Many have gone on to successful careers as performers, educators, and arts leaders, while others continue to enrich their communities through a lifelong commitment to music.
The Academy’s success is also rooted in the dedication of those who support students behind the scenes. We recognize Micki Stirling, who served as Animateur of the Young Artists Collegium Program for 18 years, and Natasha Galitzine, Collegium alumna and current Academy Coordinator, whose journey from student to mentor reflects the lasting impact of the program.
As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize the students, alumni, faculty, and families who have shaped the Academy’s legacy over the past 20 years. Their passion, dedication, and artistry have helped create a program that continues to inspire the next generation of young musicians.
