As we approach May 18, we take a moment to celebrate the birthday and enduring legacy of Winifred Scott Wood—an extraordinary musician, educator, and founding force behind the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Winifred was born on May 18, 1924, in Winnipeg, and passed away on May 16, 2012—just two days shy of her 88th birthday. Her life was shaped by music from the very beginning. A gifted pianist and passionate educator, she studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she met her husband and lifelong musical partner, Robin Wood. Together, they would go on to shape the future of music education in Victoria.
In 1964, Winifred and Robin made the courageous decision to leave their flourishing careers in London to help build what was then the fledgling Victoria School of Music. That leap of faith helped lay the foundation for what is now the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Winifred’s passion, vision, and pioneering spirit helped grow the Conservatory into a nationally recognized institution.
Her contributions were many, but she was perhaps most proud of founding the Conservatory’s piano pedagogy program, a model of excellence that inspired similar programs across departments. Through this work, and her decades of teaching, she mentored generations of piano teachers and students, shaping music education in our community and far beyond.
Winifred once said, “I think teaching music, particularly piano, is heaven. You can bring out so much in people that they don’t realize they have.” Her students—and our entire Conservatory community—are a testament to that belief.
Among her many accomplishments, Winifred was named an Honorary Citizen of the City of Victoria and, in 2004, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.
The Robin and Winifred Wood Recital Hall is dedicated in their honour, as a tribute to their outstanding musical contribution to the community of Victoria.
We honour her memory today with gratitude, and with joy for the music and inspiration she brought into the world.
Happy Birthday, Mrs. Scott Wood. Your spirit lives on in every note played, every lesson taught, and every student who walks through our doors.
