Filbert Zhang is a Grade 11 student at Mount Douglas Secondary School and studies piano with May-Ling Kwok at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He is also part of the Conservatory’s Senior Young Artists Academy Program, which provides intensive training for exceptional young musicians. Filbert has been playing piano for ten years, and his musical journey has grown significantly since his last Spark to Flame performance. He has embraced more complex repertoire, sought out new musical opportunities, and developed a deeper understanding of the music he plays—all while being inspired and encouraged by his teacher.
For this year’s performance, Filbert chose Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece that challenges him with its technical demands and expressive contrasts. He describes it as an “energetic and lyrical piece” that has led him to practice in small sections to master its wide range of moods and intricate passages. This performance is a chance for Filbert to share the stage with the orchestra once again and connect with the audience in a powerful musical experience.
Reflecting on his past Spark to Flame performance, Filbert shares:
“One lesson I was taught was to learn the music early so that the content has time to sit and I can gain a better understanding of the piece.”
Looking ahead, Filbert hopes to study music abroad this summer, continuing to grow as a musician and performer. For first-time Spark to Flame performers, he offers this advice:
“Remember that you’re performing with a group for a crowd. Listen and communicate with the orchestra’s playing, and ensure that your sound projects for the entire hall to hear.”

About Spark to Flame
The annual Spark to Flame concert, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music, is a beloved tradition that celebrates and nurtures the next generation of musical talent at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then mentored by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the performance, including special rehearsals with a full orchestra.
This year’s concert, taking place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, will shine a spotlight on seven exceptional student soloists, joined by an ensemble of their peers, faculty, and professional musicians for an unforgettable evening of inspiring music.
