Join us in honouring Robin Wood, Principal Emeritus of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, on what would have been his 100th birthday on October 13, 2024. Although he used to boast, “I’ve never worked a day in my life,” Robin accomplished more professionally and personally than most people ever dream of.

A consummate pianist, inspiring and compassionate teacher, and globe-trotting adjudicator, Robin was also a perceptive mentor and the kindest of friends. In his four decades at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, he embodied the best to which we aspire: high musical standards paired with a deep commitment to encouraging students to grow as both musicians and people.

In 1965, Robin and his wife Winifred were invited to leave their flourishing careers at the Royal Academy of Music to help build a new music school in Victoria. What was intended to be a two-year stay turned into four decades of dedication as they performed, taught, and served as Principal and Vice-Principal of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, later becoming Principal Emeritus and Vice-Principal Emerita.

Robin’s influence extended to the University of Victoria, where he was Professor Emeritus of Piano. His students, both from the Conservatory and the University, are recognized worldwide, carrying forward his profound understanding of music and reflecting his generosity of spirit and humor.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Robin died at the age of 79 on February 28, 2004, with his family at his side. Music was playing at the time: a recording of performances by Conservatory faculty and students at the previous evening’s 40th Anniversary concert. To no one’s surprise, he continued to teach until a week before his death.

Today, we celebrate his life and lasting impact on music education in Victoria and beyond. Robin’s belief that music is for everyone continues to be the heartbeat of the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
