Fine Cello Demonstration and Educational Workshop

Join us on Saturday afternoon 24th June at the Victoria Conservatory of Music for a Fine Cello Demonstration and Educational Workshop co-presented by the Conservatory Strings Department and Talbot Antique Cellos. The event runs from 1 to 5pm in the Wood Hall.

David Talbot from Talbot Antique Cellos will be presenting a number of fine antique and contemporary cellos & bows from England, France, Germany, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Canada.

Cellos will include:

  • Thomas Kennedy Workshop, London, England c 1825
  • Collin-Mezin ‘Paolo Giacomelli’ (JTL), Mirecourt, France c.1910
  • John Juzek ‘Master Art’, Prague, Czechoslovakia 1931
  • Dario Aguzzi ‘Guarneri’, Vidigulfo, Italy 2015
  • Hugh Sutherland ‘Bear Claw’, Victoria, Canada 1980

Cello bows will include some from (now retired) local master archetier; Reid Hudson.

Attendees wanting to try the instruments & bows are encouraged to contact Talbot Antique Cellos prior to the event at [email protected] or 250 818 8487 to reserve a time slot. ‘Break out’ rooms will be available.

Victoria Conservatory of Music faculty & retired Victoria Symphony cellist Martin Bonham will be on hand to answer questions & offer advice about ‘choosing the right cello & bow for me’.

Seasoned local luthier Travis Short of Swinglow Strings will be available to talk about ‘good practices for maintaining, what to look for & mistakes to avoid when choosing a cello’.

This is a great opportunity for Victoria Conservatory of Music cello students to deepen their knowledge around their chosen instrument.

Cellists of all skill levels are welcome to attend.
