About the Workshop

It came from … (cue: scary music)… The Conservatory!

Your mission: To seek out strange new waveforms, unearth exotic ancient scales and discover monstrous musical progressions and melodies in this retro-futuristic musical extravaganza known only as “The Experiment”!

Together, our band of intrepid composing adventurers will re-imagine the classic monster movie soundtrack: aliens, vampires, mummies, werewolves and mad scientists will inspire our minds and guide our hands to create something new and terrible … an electronic work to amaze and terrify the ages yet to come.

What weapons do you need?

All that you require is an inquisitive spirit, a desire to make new music, and be 13-18 years old (this sort of adventuring requires a youthful courageous spirit!)

The workshop is spread over four three-hour sessions across two consecutive weekends. Do you have the courage to embark with us on our voyage into the unknown? Sign up to join “The Experiment” today… you won’t regret it!

Topics to include musical ideation and development, analog electronic instruments both physical and virtual, audio and MIDI recording and editing, arrangement, mixing, music theory including scales, modes, chords, melodies and counterpoint, and effects such as reverb and chorus.

Your facilitator/guide is Melody Ayres-Griffiths, a renowned local composer with decades of experience writing new music in various genres including electronic, chiptune, dance, symphonic and soundtrack, and heard by millions of people around the world (and maybe even in outer space…).
