Event Highlight
The Saturday, November 16 festival will feature an exciting highlight for our community: Victoria Conservatory/Camosun College Postsecondary student Naomi Triebwasser’s new piece, Hutłilala gax̱a̱n (Listen To Me).
Naomi, who also goes by her Kwak̕wala name, Ne’nagwas, brings a powerful and unique voice to this year’s NeuzTec lineup. Her piece, Hutłilala gax̱a̱n, intertwines traditional songs from the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw people with modern and contemporary elements, addressing the critical and heart-wrenching issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. This emotive work creates a profound listening experience that calls for reflection, remembrance, and respect. Through Hutłilala gax̱a̱n, Naomi offers a compelling message of strength and resilience from her community, skillfully blending the past and present to amplify voices that have too often gone unheard.
Hailing from Gilford Island, Alert Bay, and Blunden Harbour, Naomi has been immersed in music from a young age, weaving together traditional and contemporary sounds. Her journey has included performing with The Tenors, sharing her love for her Kwak̕wala culture by teaching singing and dancing to students at her childhood elementary school. Now studying at Victoria Conservatory of Music, Naomi is collaborating with producer and engineer Wynn Gogol on her debut EP, a project that promises to carry her unique artistry to new audiences.
Join us on November 16 at NeuzTec to witness the debut of Hutłilala gax̱a̱n (Listen To Me) and other groundbreaking works by some of the most promising new voices in music. Naomi Triebwasser’s performance promises to be an unforgettable experience—don’t miss this chance to support and celebrate this incredible emerging artist.
