Overview

The Victoria Conservatory of Music is looking for a reliable individual to join our Facilities team in a full-time capacity. This individual will be a key part of the team that helps deliver a clean and vibrant space for the community to gather, study, enrich, and enjoy.


Key Responsibilities
  • Keeping building and property in clean and orderly condition.
  • Performing routine cleaning activities, including:
    • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming floors.
    • Scrubbing, sanitizing, and suppling restroom facilities.
    • Dusting furniture, walls, and equipment.
    • Cleaning windows, mirrors, and partitions.
    • Preparing and mixing cleaning solutions.
  • Setting up rooms and equipment for classes and lessons.
  • Facilitating room entry/control of faculty and students.

Overview

A nurturing community of creativity and commitment awaits the next Music Librarian and Archivist at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Reporting to the Dean, the Music Librarian and Archivist performs an essential role at the Conservatory and is responsible for the smooth and efficient operations and integrity of the expanding Conservatory Music Library, digitization, cataloguing, and archives along with the future development of learning portals with music resources for faculty and students here in Victoria and beyond. He/she/they are responsible for cataloguing and organizing music scores, recordings, and archival materials, collection development, reference and research assistance, music lending, and the preservation of the collection and archives. This position is a central and caring enabler and connector with faculty, students, administrative staff, music publishers, and the public.

This role requires a professionally trained librarian/archivist with demonstrated experience, strong technical competence, and sound judgement in managing music and archival collections within an academic or arts organization.


Key Responsibilities
  • Managing all aspects of the Music Library and Archives.
  • Assessing the needs of the library and archive, and designing and executing necessary projects to meet those needs.
  • Assisting library users visiting the Conservatory library.
  • Answering reference and research questions, and providing research assistance.
  • Circulation duties.
  • Working with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that library collections and services are meeting their needs.
  • Acquiring new library materials and supplies in accordance with approved purchases.
  • Managing and assessing donations of sheet music, books and other materials.
  • Cataloging of library material in all formats.
  • Managing the ILS/OPAC/database.
  • Collection maintenance.
  • Outreach to faculty and certain classes, as well as to outside organizations.
  • Supervising and training volunteers, practicum students, or other employees as needed.
  • Assisting the Conservatory marketing department with awareness campaigns.

Desired Qualifications:
Education and Professional Background
  • A Masters degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS, MLS), Archival Studies, or a related field.
  • Training or education in music, musicology, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3–5 years of professional experience in a library or archive setting, preferably within an academic or arts and culture environment.


Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • Proficiency in cataloging and metadata standards (e.g., MARC, RDA, Dublin Core), especially for music materials.
  • Experience managing Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs) is desirable.
  • Understanding of archival best practices, including appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of materials.
  • Experience with collection development, acquisitions, and donation management.
  • Comfortable using digital tools and library technologies, including library databases, digital repositories, and productivity software.
  • Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to music materials and archival content.


Interpersonal and Organizational Skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong research and reference skills, with the ability to assist users at all levels of inquiry.
  • Experience in training, supervising, or mentoring volunteers, interns, or staff.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Overview

The Victoria Conservatory of Music is looking for a Venues Technician/House Technician to join the Events and Rentals Team. The Venues Technician/House Technician will play a key role in ensuring safe, welcoming, and well managed spaces while collaborating closely with artists, educators, students, therapists, staff, and community members for the use of performances spaces, including the Alix Goolden Performance Hall, the Robin & Winifred Wood Recital Hall, and a black-box theatre space.

This is a casual on-call position, and shifts vary from month to month with variable shift times, including evenings and weekends.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or support production process including load in, installation, rehearsals (as required), show operation, strike, and restore of required elements including audio, lighting, stage, video.
  • Provide basic stage management as needed, including leading a small team for select events.
  • Coordinate and oversee activities of technical or auxiliary staff contracted on behalf clients.
  • Oversee the cleanliness and readiness of rental spaces before and during events, ensuring post event restoration in collaboration with Facilities/Custodial.
  • Prepare timely post-event summaries and reports.
  • Liaise with clients and manage scheduled staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Work closely with Conservatory event staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain and ensure timely communication with client throughout the rental process and information on any actual or anticipated deviations (i.e. crew hours extending beyond original call, venue cleaning fee, usage of additional equipment and ensuring this is documented and authorization is secured prior to continuing).
  • Timely reporting of significant issues to Venues Manager and/or Director of Events, Partnerships, and Rentals.
  • Attend production meetings, as required.
  • Assist with venue technical documentation, as required.
  • Conduct maintenance of any technical elements needed as scheduled, or report on equipment to be send out for repair.
  • Conduct orientation and training to facility renters, student, and volunteers in safety, emergency procedures, technical and facility operations (as required).
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and courtesy with all user groups and performs with positive professional contact acting as a point of contact with artists, staff, and clients.
  • Execute and coordinate emergency procedures and reporting all accidents/incidents immediately.

  • Able to safely perform manual labor tasks, work comfortably at heights using ladders and lifts, and lift/carry equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • This role requires frequent movement and the ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Knowledge of professional sound and lighting systems with the following systems as an asset:

Job Description

As a member of a diverse and vibrant community of artist mentors within the Victoria Conservatory, this part-time faculty position offers the incumbent the freedom to balance teaching cello to students of all ages and levels, while pursuing a professional career as performer and/or recording artist on the beautiful west coast of Canada. As the instructor builds and maintains an active teaching studio in cello, with focus on the Classical genre, supporting the Conservatory’s recruitment efforts, and maintaining regular communications with the department leadership and faculty colleagues, students are guided to becoming well-rounded players with solid technique and musicianship.

The instructor will have a strong desire to be part of a team of dedicated teachers and will encourage their students to participate as appropriate in activities offered through the Conservatory, such as free masterclasses and performance classes, studio recitals, special events, and other performance opportunities. Strings faculty are encouraged to work with their Department Head to develop recruitment opportunities and strategies and create programs which meet the artistic and pedagogical goals of faculty and the musical and social development of students.


Qualifications and Requirements

Education, Professional Training and Acquired Skills:

  • 4 years of postsecondary/advanced level training (BMus) or the professional equivalent with recognized accredited teachers; preferably including having obtained a MMus or equivalent credential.


Experience
  • At least 2 years of recognized professional performing in the Classical field, including experience with solo, chamber and ensemble performance.
  • At least 2 years teaching/coaching students of a variety of ages and levels.
  • Broad and fluent range of knowledge of standard materials for instruction of this discipline, from beginner to advanced, with the ability to demonstrate a level and standard of recognized expertise within this area.
  • Experience coaching chamber music, including ensembles with mixed instrumentation, is beneficial but not required.

Are you an Early Childhood Music instructor with certification in ECM methodology? We would love to welcome you to our team to serve our young students at the Conservatory’s Downtown Victoria and Langford campuses, as well as outreach at daycares and community centres. We are seeking instructors certified in Kodály, Orff, and/or other recognized Early Childhood Music Education methodologies. As a member of the Conservatory’s faculty and reporting to the Dean and working with our Early Childhood Music and In-School Coordinator, the successful applicant will be an integral part of the growth and success of our growing ECM program. All faculty are independently contracted as service providers and paid hourly according to established fee grid. The Conservatory’s ECM program is in high demand and offers trained ECM instructors the opportunity to build out their practice at the Conservatory as desired while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.


Duties
  • Prior experience teaching young children and working with children with parents present.
  • Certification in Kodály, Orff Schulwerk, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and/or other recognized Early Childhood Music methodology.

  • Knowledge of intervention strategies for children and youth, use of superior improvisational skills and creativity, as well as more structured model sessions.

  • Candidates should be experienced in working with young children and have basic skills on keyboard, guitar, or other chordal accompanying instruments.
  • The ECM instructor will be teaching at the Victoria Conservatory downtown campus, Langford campus, and in the community at daycare and community centres.

Compensation: As independently contracted service providers, Victoria Conservatory of Music Faculty set their hourly studio rate in consultation with their respective department head, and according to the established Conservatory Tuition / Instructor Fee grid. Hourly compensation rates currently range from $39.60 – $59.20/hour.

Job Description

As a member of a diverse and vibrant community of artist mentors within the Victoria Conservatory of Music, this part-time faculty position offers the incumbent the freedom to balance teaching voice to students of all ages and levels, while pursuing a professional career as performer and/or recording artist on the beautiful west coast of Canada. As the instructor builds and maintains an active teaching studio in voice, with focus on the Classical and/or the Contemporary genres, supporting the Conservatory’s recruitment efforts, and maintaining regular communications with the department leadership and faculty colleagues, students are guided to becoming well-rounded singers with solid technique and musicianship. The instructor encourages students to participate as appropriate in activities offered through the Conservatory, including free masterclasses and performance classes, studio recitals and other performance opportunities.


Qualifications and Requirements

Education, Professional Training and Acquired Skills

  • Four years of Classical Training postsecondary/advanced level or the professional equivalent with recognized accredited teachers; preferably including having obtained a BMus, DipMus, ARCT, AVCM, or equivalent credential / apprenticeship.
  • Piano Proficiency: Able to accompany lessons (sight reading and ability to play from charts/ figured bass).
  • Knowledge of, as well as the ability to coach/teach, both the Classical and Popular repertoire.
  • Knowledge of Song structures / Composition training as an additional asset will be considered.

Experience

  • At least ten years of recognized professional performing in either/or both the Classical and Contemporary fields.
  • At least four years teaching/coaching in Classical and/or Popular repertoire.
  • Experience touring professionally and/or in-studio work as a recording artist will be considered as additional assets.


Areas of Teaching Specialization
  • Classical; Contemporary/Popular; Musical theatre; Rock, Folk, Jazz, and other non-Classical genres.
  • Languages: Spoken and written English, working knowledge of French, German and Italian preferred for Classical instruction.
