About the Masterclass

Experience an engaging and insightful masterclass with renowned cellist and educator Dr. Minna Rose Chung, presented as part of CelloFest at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Known internationally for her thoughtful and innovative approach to teaching, Dr. Chung brings a unique perspective shaped by her work as Professor of Cello at the University of Manitoba and co-author of CelloMind: Intonation and Technique. In this public masterclass, selected cellists will have the opportunity to perform and receive individualized coaching, delving into the subtleties of technique and musical expression.

Observers will gain a rare behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative process between artist and student, offering valuable insights for musicians and audiences alike. Whether you are a cellist, teacher, or music enthusiast, this session promises to deepen your understanding of the artistry and craft of cello playing.

CelloFest 2026

CelloFest is a three-day event at the Victoria Conservatory of Music featuring renowned cellists and pedagogues Desmond Hoebig (former Professor at Rice University; former Principal Cello of Cincinnati, Houston and Cleveland orchestras) and Dr. Minna Rose Chung (Professor at the University of Manitoba; co-author of CelloMind).

CelloFest begins with the Opening Concert on Friday, May 22 at 7:30 pm in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. Following Friday’s concert, Dr. Chung and Mr. Hoebig will each lead a masterclass for young aspiring cellists on Saturday, May 23 on the stage of AGPH. CelloFest concludes with a Final Concert on Sunday, May 24 featuring the participants of the masterclasses and a cello choir.
